Grgich Hills Merlot 2013

Member Review by EMark:

Interesting wine. VERY light on the fruit—cassis, blueberry—on the tip of the tongue. I’m thinking Cabernet Sauvignon, here, not Merlot. Some stoniness. Very serious tannin. I’m OK with this wine, as is, because I really did not pay much for it. However, the lack of fruit and the lack of acid suggests to me that it is not a candidate for aging.

Nice Merlot with lots of good structure. Cabernet lovers Merlot by any standards. Lots of bramble and berry on the nose. Eat your heart out Sideways. Cheers!

Opened up an '04 with some grilled steaks. The wine smelled like leather and licorice with some raspberry thrown in for good measure. It was exceptionally smooth, and had nice berry and cocoa tastes with a finish that lasted for quite a while.

his Merlot is so rich and fruity, it's like an orchard in a bottle. Really gob smacks you with blackberries, cherries, plums and currants, set off with some heat from alcohol. Showcases the sunny ability of Napa Valley to get fruit this ripe. - S.H. This is a Cabernet lovers Merlot! This is a Cabernet lover's Merlot! With wonderfully complex aromas of cherry, cedar, cocoa powder and a hint of tea leaves, this wine's firm tannins and food-friendly acidity make it the perfect partner with beef tenderloin, rack of lamb or roasted pork.

Rating: 89/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the September 2010 issue. Young and nervy, and entirely within the familial approach, this Merlot from Grgich Hills favors black cherry fruit with a distinct overlay of green herbs. Its firm construction comes with enough flesh and suppleness to be enjoyable now and to promise a more open stance with two to five years of cellaring. It provides clear contrast to the more rounded, succulent style, and it acts more like Cabernet than most Merlot.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.
