Grgich Hills Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A freaking fruit bomb, texturally plush, viscous and mouth filling, with waves of dark, sweet fruit flavors, spicy oak tones and lovely nuanced chili and herb accents that are pure and deep. This is open for business in an opulent, friendly in your face style. Too much wine for me! 84pts

Miljenko “Mike” Grgich first gained international recognition at the celebrated “Paris Tasting” of 1976. Then, in a now-historic blind tasting, a panel of eminent French judges swirled, sniffed, and sipped an array of the fabled white Burgundies of France and a small sampling of upstart Chardonnays from the Napa Valley. When their scores were tallied, the French judges were shocked: they had chosen Mike’s 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay as the finest white wine in the world. Mon Dieu! The results stunned the international wine establishment and immediately earned Mike a reputation as one of the greatest winemakers in the world. Now 87 years old, and still sporting his signature blue beret, Mike was inducted into the Vinter Hall of Fame in March 2008 in honor of his many contributions to the wine industry. While many other Napa wineries pursue strategies of expansion, Mike, along with his daughter, Violet, and his nephew, Ivo Jeramaz, prefer to stay small. Their aim, year after year, is to improve the quality of their vineyards and their wines, relying on Mike’s unique artistic and intuitive touch. This strategy continues to pay significant dividends. Many wineries buy their grapes from outside vineyards. Grgich Hills now owns all of its own vineyards, all of which are certified organic and Biodynamic. Beginning with the 2003 vintage, all Grgich Hills wines were labeled “Estate Grown.” This guarantees a consistently superior level of quality, and it guarantees that Grgich Hills will remain a shining symbol of prestige and good taste. In recognition of that important milestone, the winery changed its name in 2007 to Grgich Hills Estate. When Miljenko "Mike" Grgich joined forces with Austin Hills in 1977 to form Grgich Hills Cellar, the original label design proposed a rearing horse clenching a baton in its mouth, a colorful feature of the Hills' family crest. After some friendly debate over the label and how it should be redesigned to reflect the philosophy of the newly formed winery, the winning argument concluded with the point that "Horses do not make wine. Grapes make wine!" and thus, the current design was agreed upon. Read less

Remind in 2015 to track down a bottle to drink. After a last minute change to dine in rather than dine out, we picked this up to drink. The tannins are awesome and the vanilla and berry smooth flavors are quite tasty. Buy a bottle and wait as long as you can to drink ;)

Huge red fruit and vanilla nose. Acidic and big with even more vanilla on the palate. Tar and oak. Acidic!

Very loud fruit bomb. What it lacks in complexity it makes up for with raw fruity spice.

Exceptionally fruity, but just beginning to mellow out with a little age. Medium tannins and lower acidity, but it was the fruit that really shone through - thick, treacly, plums and cherries. Some chocolate and cedar helped round the wine out.

Vintage: We enjoyed a beautiful vintage in 2013 with consistent sunshine and moderate temperatures that grapes love. After a wet start to winter in 2012, spring was warmer than usual, triggering an early bud break and lowering and fruit set under sunny skies. With only one heat spike in late June/early July, Napa’s typical warm days and cool nights produced healthy vines. We started harvesting about two weeks earlier than usual and never seemed to stop with grapes coming in at a steady pace. Vineyard: Our Yountville vineyard forms the heart of our Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, with grapes from our Rutherford and Calistoga vineyards rounding out the blend. We farm all of our vineyards naturally, without artificial pesticides or herbicides, and they are certiied organic. The result is a full-bodied, elegant Cabernet Sauvignon with pure flavors and a pronounced sense of place. The Wine: We believe in minimal intervention winemaking, fermenting the grapes with indigenous yeast at moderate temperatures that allow the wine to gain flavors and color from extended skin contact. Each lot is aged separately for several months, and then blended to create a wine that is more complex than the individual parts. After blending, the wine spent another year and half in barrel to completely harmonize before bottling. The wine’s complex flavors of black currants, clove and mocha are topped of by licorice. Its full-bodied, rich mouthfeel carries these flavors for a long, lingering finish that loves seared steak, Gorgonzola gnocchi, beef bourguignon and ratatouille. Blend: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon 12% Merlot 5% Petit Verdot 4% Cabernet Franc Time in oak: 21 months in French oak Type of oak: 60% new French oak Total acid: 5.7 g/L pH: 3.63 Alcohol: 14.6%

Vintage: We enjoyed a wonderful growing season from start to finish in 2012. A gentle spring allowed for textbook flowering and fruit set, followed by a long procession of warm, sunny days with no nasty heat spikes. Thanks to the excellent weather, the longer-than-average growing season produced perfectly balanced and ripe grapes. Each lot is aged separately for several months, and then blended to create a wine that is more complex than the individual parts. Our Cabernet is rich with aromas of balsamic glazed figs, dried rose petals and a touch of green peppercorns. Smooth and rich on the palate with a persistent finish, this wine is the perfect partner with grilled steak, rack of lamb or roasted duck. - Winery Vintage: Thanks to cool weather and unexpected rains, 2011 was a demanding but, in the end, rewarding vintage for us. The wet winter and spring delayed the start of bloom, and then cool temperatures slowed grape development, pushing the start of harvest back by two weeks. More reminiscent of France than Napa Valley, this vintage fashioned elegant wines with great aromatics, and the lower level of sugars from the cool growing season translated into lower alcohol. Licorice sets the tone and makes for a dry entry, headed up by roasted coffee beans and a meaty intensity. A power-packed real estate mogul: Estate vineyards in Yountville, Rutherford and Calistoga deliver the goods in this full-bodied expression of Napa
