Gresy Marchesi di Gaiun Martinenga Barbaresco 1996

Winemaker's Notes:

Marchesi di Gresy is an 88 acre winery made up of four estates situated in the Langhe and Monferrto. In the late 1960's, owner Alberto di Gresy decided that he no longer wanted to continue selling his families grapes to other producers, so in 1973, he began producing his own wine. The Marchesi di Gresy winery is superbly positioned in the prestigious Martinenga cru in Barbaresco, one of the most famous vineyards in the zone. This 1996 Barbaresco Gaiun boasts a dark ruby/purple color as well as a gorgeous, Musigny-like nose of flowers, minerals, and black fruits. It is impeccably made, with great elegance, medium body, terrific fruit intensity, and no sense of heaviness. It marries well on the table with rich, meaty dishes and mature cheeses, and should be drunk within the next 2 years.

Alberto di Grésy was born in Milan on June 1, 1952, where he completed his studies and graduated from the Bocconi University with a Doctorate in Business Administration. Growing up with a passion for the land and the wine, he spent many weekends and most of his summer vacations at Villa Giulia. This 19th century hunting lodge, built by his grandfather, Carlo, is located on the hill called Monte Aribaldo in the heart of the Piedmont region. He supervised the agricultural operations of the family estates and concluded early on that he didn't want to limit himself to selling the grapes from his vineyards to the finest wine producers in the area as was the tradition in the Langhe. In 1973 Alberto di Grésy began vinifying his own wine: his objective was to produce wine with the best available technology while respecting tradition, and to transfer as much as possible of the character and personality of the terrain vineyard site, and varietal into the bottle.
