What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Winemakers Notes

Greenock Creek Wines is situated at Seppeltsfield in the rolling hills between the hamlets of Greenock and Marananga, on the western edge of the Barossa Valley. The winery's first release was in 1988, when it sold a 1986 Shiraz and a 1988 Chardonnay from its tiny cellar door situated beneath the Waugh's 150 year old stone cottage. Since then the winery has planted, grafted or acquired more vines, and now specialises in premium red wine production. Only grapes grown on the property are used, making it truly an estate winery. The range of wines includes five Shiraz, two Cabernet Sauvignons read more...

Reviews

Rich and fleshy, with pretty coffee, plum, wild berry and spice notes that are smooth and polished, long and flavorful. An extremely limited release wine from one of Australia's Cult wineries.

Only 6 bottles or less available. Robert Parker 98 points! From the estate's youngest vineyard (seven years)- the 2001 Shiraz Alice's (600 cases) spends 26-28 months in old American oak barrels and small foudres (hogsheads)- and is bottled unfiltered. It is a riveting example of richness- concentration- and body. It should drink well young- but evolve nicely for 12-15 years.
