The massive 1998 Shiraz Seven Acres performed better than it did in its youth. A nuanced, complex bouquet of black fruits, forest floor, graphite, licorice, and leather precedes a peppery, full-bodied Shiraz of extraordinary concentration, density, freshness, and vivacity. While vibrant, exuberant, and huge, it is not over the top, nor does it exhibit any evidence of wood.

Outstanding but more tightly knit is Greenock Creek’s 1998 Shiraz Seven Acre. Made form 12-year old vines and aged in American oak (a combination of new and old), this is a lighter style (although by no means a wimpish wine) that has greater availability. An elegant wine for the normally powerful Greenock Creek style, this wine exhibits dark ruby/purple color, and a bouquet of black raspberries intermixed with blackberry, currant, pepper, and spicy wood. The wine is deep, full-bodied, and beautifully knit. Some tannin still needs be to resolved in the finish, but this wine should age beautifully for 10–15 years.
