Grapillon d'Or Gigondas 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

Looking first at the 2014 Gigondas from tank, this blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah comes from a mix of terroirs spread throughout the appellation mostly composed of clay, sand and limestone soils. Completely destemmed and aged mostly in old oak barrels (25% is in cement tank), it has charming, medium-bodied and classic notes of red fruits, crushed flowers, incense and garrigue. It should be a textbook Gigondas that will drink nicely on release and evolve gracefully through 2024.- Wine Advocate

The nose showed spicy blackberry fruit with lavender, black pepper, dried meats and crushed rocks. On the palate, it was like velvet over a stone-structure yet juicy throughout with black fruits, spice and hints of black licorice. Berries, pepper and olive tapenade lingered on the medium-long finish with a tinge of heat. (92 points)

2009 Gigondas AC Dunkles Rubinrot; Duft nach Kirsche und Waldbeeren, feine Mineralität; im Mund frische Kirschfrucht, relativ unkompliziert, schöner Schliff, wirkt noch etwas unfertig, feinbittere Tannine, ganz leicht oxydativ, recht schöner Nachhall 87/100 2013 - 2019 Stefan Krimm

This wine was gorgeous with rich blackberry fruit, allspice and black strap molasses on the nose. On the palate, I found black currant, spicy clove, and dark chocolate with licorice on the long finish. If anything, the only thing that hurt this wine was a perceptible amount of alcohol on both the nose and palate.

The nose is smooth and creamy with blue fruit, spice cookie, cherries and a bit of barnyard. The palate is soft and full showing cherry cough syrup and clove with vibrant acidity and a long finish

Medium plus body, deep color, pleasant grapey fruit, some heat and drying oak on finish. An excellent value @ $14 (Costco).

This modern and rich style of Gigondas is perfect for those who tend to prefer bold New World wines. Be prepared for big blackberry fruit and generous licorice aromas and flavors.
