What to Expect

Merlot has gotten a bad rap as of late but there is no denying the wine's appeal. Packed with deep, dark berry fruit and nuanced hints of cocoa, herb and earth with a soft structure. Its velvety texture makes Merlot instantly appealing and an obvious alternative to similar, more tannic Bordeaux varieties.

Winemakers Notes

"Dark red brick in color. The wine shows rich lush fruit aromas, loads of ripe plums and cassis with hints of vanilla and elegant toast and fine leather hints. The mouth-feel is ultra lush with layers and layers of velvet tannins amidst ripe and concentrated berry and skin characters with a wonderfully intense and smooth finish. This is Merlot at its best, intense, seductive and powerful with great balance and also classic earthiness and structure making this a wine with great aging potential. Will match and enhance Steaks, Lamb and Game dishes. (Winemaker) "

Unfiltered and unfined, Roth's 2001 merlot is a deep, opaque brick red in the glass. Highly aromatic, the nose is rich and youthful with intense black cherries, grilled steak and Moroccan spice. As is true with most Roth creations, this wine is fruit forward, but balanced — with cherries, spearmint, sweet basil and faint smoked meat flavors. Full bodied but still remarkably elegant, this is a wine of nearly ideal balance that should improve with cellar time — probably up to ten years.

And while Roth didn't make his private label — Grapes of Roth — in his garage, he's embraced the garagiste philosophy, crafting fewer than two hundred cases of his 2001 Grapes of Roth read more...
