Penfolds Grange, an iconic red wine produced by the Penfolds winery in Australia. It was first produced in 1951 by winemaker Max Schubert. His intention was to create a distinguished wine with elegance and longevity in Australia to rival those from fine appellations in Europe, based on the techniques he picked up in Bordeaux, France. The wine is named for “the grange,” the childhood home of Mary, wife of 19th century winery founder Christopher Penfold. Since then, the wines have won numerous gold medals and prestigious accolades, and are highly valued by collectors. Bottles from older decades dating as far back as the first ones produced in the 1950s sell for stratospheric prices. The wines were originally labeled “Penfolds Grange Hermitage” until the 1990, after the European Union ordered the “Hermitage” dropped because of the place name shared with the Rhone appellation.    The wine consists of a large percentage of Shiraz with smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are harvested from a wide source of vineyard locations which change depending on the growing conditions within the vintage year. This ensures the consistency of the wine’s character and value without making it dependent on single locations.  Read less

Purplish maroon with well balanced rim, prominent leggings, strong fruity and note of earthy nose, rich texture and medium tannin, richly spicy and concentrate, blackcurrant and black vines with hint of vanilla & coffee. Full-bodied with warm sensation and mediocre aftertaste. An hour decant developed more soothing texture and darker fruity note with developed chocholate aftertaste.

An excellent wine but not an outstanding vintage for Grange the 1997 seems a trifle loose-knit and less "packed" when compared to great vintages in the past. Black plums and blackberries are laced with dried spices and vanilla... Wine Enthusiast.
