In 1320, Pope Jean XXII had the first vines planted in CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE. But only in 1360 did the vine acquire a certain importance, first with the white wine drunk by Innocent VI, then with red wine; but these products remained little known. Only from the 18th century onward, did the vine occupy the territory and papal wine begin to be famous. In the Jaume family, the generations have perpetuated the profession of winegrower since Mathieu JAUME decided, in 1826, to grow vines in CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE. The successions were assumed by Marius, Fernand and Roger. In 1979, Alain and Odile JAUME carried on the family tradition with the creation of the GRAND VENEUR WINERY. At the beginning, the vineyard extended over 22 acres. Over time, the vineyard grew to today's figure of nearly 135 acres spread in the CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE, LIRAC, CÔTES DU RHÔNE VILLAGES "Les Champauvins", and CÔTES DU RHÔNE areas. In 2003, a new estate of 35 acres was acquired: the "CLOS DE SIXTE" Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée LIRAC. This appellation located 10 kilometres from Châteauneuf du Pape, is one of the thirteen Crus of the Rhône Valley. Over the years, the family has grown, too. Today, Sébastien and Christophe are gradually taking charge of the management of the estate. The 2009 Grand Veneur Chacirc;teauneuf du Pape (made from the same blend as the 2008 mdash; 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre) exhibits an inky/plum/purple color along with an impressive bouquet of Asian hoisin sauce, blackberries, black currants, sweet cherries, licorice and camphor. It is a dense, full-bodied, rich, heady wine with silky tannins, low acidity and abundant glycerin. Drink it over the next decade or more. Grand Veneurrsquo;s two luxury offerings are among the finest wines of the appellation.

The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape (a 3,500 case blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre from nearly 10 year old vines) exhibits abundant notes of sweet cassis, licorice, kirsch, garrigue and tobacco leaf in a full-bodied, layered, opulently textured style. This hedonistic turn-on should continue to drink well for a decade or more.

Dark purple. Sexy red and dark berries and cherry on the nose, made more complex by an exotic hint of apricot coming up with air. Deep, chewy and weighty but surprisingly fresh, offering black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and mounting floral character. Delivers a load of sweet dark fruit and finishes with lingering florality and good persistence.

Even Grand Veneurrsquo;s traditional cuveacute;e shines in 2009, offering up notions of black cherries and chocolate liqueur. Itrsquo;s full bodied and richly textured, with a long, velvety finish. Simply put, itrsquo;s plush and delicious, with no need to age it any further. Drink nowndash;2020.
