Grand Reve Vintners Collaboration Series Sangiovese Ciel du Cheval Red Mountain 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Mark Ryan McNeilly, Winemaker Ciel du Cheval, Red Mountain 90% Sangiovese, 10% Syrah 53 cases produced Occasionally, growing conditions are so perfect for a particular varietal that we create a limited reserve wine. The 2006 Sangiovese is a result of such conditions, resulting in an exceptional expression of this Tuscan grape. With 10% Syrah in the blend, this dark ruby-colored wine offers up a lovely perfume of red cherry and raspberry with a hint of mocha in the background. This is followed by a sweetly fruited, spicy wine with excellent breadth, a round, vibrant palate-feel, and a long, pure finish. This unique expression can be enjoyed now and over the next 10-12 years.

Founded in 2004 by business entrepreneur Paul McBride and vineyard manager Ryan Johnson, Grand Rêve introduces a new collaborative approach to winemaking in Washington State. Ryan Johnson has been growing wine grapes on Red Mountain for 10 vintages and is the vineyard manager not only for Ciel du Cheval, but also for the Cadence Cara Mia, Galitzine Estate, and DeLille Grand Ciel vineyards, all located within Washington’s famed Red Mountain AVA, or American Viticultural Area. Grand Rêve exclusively sources fruit from Ciel du Cheval vineyard blocks specifically farmed for this project by Johnson. Ciel du Cheval, known for its highly coveted, elegant and complex fruit, is regarded by many of Washington’s top winemakers as one of the state’s most important vineyards. The grapes are presented to a “dream team” of acclaimed Washington winemakers who craft them into extremely limited-production, single-vineyard wines, bottled and released under the Grand Rêve label as the “Collaboration Series.” This all-star cast includes Ben Smith of Cadence, Mark McNeilly of Mark Ryan Winery, Ross Mickel of Ross Andrew Winery, Carolyn Lakewold of Donedei and Chris Gorman of Gorman Winery. Grand Rêve is also breaking new ground in Washington viticulture by pioneering the first hillside vineyard located on the rocky, steep upper slopes of Red Mountain. Inspired by the sensational vineyards of Hermitage, the Côte Rôtie, and Priorat, Grand Rêve Vineyard aspires to create a vineyard site that compares to the finest in the world. Currently under development, the Grand Rêve Vineyard on Red Mountain expects its first harvest in the fall of 2010. Read less

There's no doubt this is by far the best wine from Washington State. Very silky, well balanced, long final, wonderful taste!
