The Graham's port house is probably one of the most recognizable names in the port world. Their style of port is ultra rich with confectioned aromas of freshly macerated black berries. The fruit, sugar and tannin levels are all elevated, and even more so in this vintage.
2003 Graham's Vintage Port A stylized wine, already softening a bit, making for a rounded, firm port. Ultra-concentrated fruit lays the foundation for hints of rich, red flower and baking spices. Powerful perfume. The mouthfeel is thick and sweet at first and the tannins take grip and hold the flavors for what seems like minutes. Great harmony amongst all the senses.
Established in 1820, W & J Graham is one of the most famous names in the Port Trade and has long been synonymous with the greatest Vintage Ports. The Symington Family acquired the company from the Graham’s family in 1970, so today Graham’s remains a wholly family-owned firm. At the heart of Graham’s Port is the famous Quinta dos Malvedos in the upper reaches of the Douro Valley. The old winery was completely renovated in 2000 and it is now equipped with three of the revolutionary robotic lagares that ‘tread’ the grapes. Alongside these are the ancient granite lagares where some of the harvest is still trodden by human foot. This is an extremely fine wine made in the very best of the Graham tradition. Great depth of structure, endless layers of very ripe blackberry fruit. A classic Graham in the style of its famous predecessors. James Suckling in Wine Spectator gives this port 94 points and says, "Loads of tar and blackberry aromas follow through to a full-bodied palate, with medium sweetness, big, velvety tannins and a long finish. A big, juicy wine."
