Graham's 1963

Winemaker's Notes:

Established in 1820, W & J Graham is one of the most famous names in the Port Trade and has long been synonymous with the greatest Vintage Ports. The Symington Family acquired the company from the Graham’s family in 1970, so today Graham’s remains a wholly family-owned firm. At the heart of Graham’s Port is the famous Quinta dos Malvedos in the upper reaches of the Douro Valley. The old winery was completely renovated in 2000 and it is now equipped with three of the revolutionary robotic lagares that ‘tread’ the grapes. Alongside these are the ancient granite lagares where some of the harvest is still trodden by human foot. 1963 is a monumental Vintage of legendary proportions. One of the 20th Century's finest. Vintage Port against which all others are judged. Declared by all the major Port houses. Along with 1945 this Vintage is a classic. Power, dimension and real character, are all hallmarks of this most memorable Vintage. Even after 40 years the Graham’s 1963 never fails to impress with its superbly balanced components of fruit, tannin and elegance. Robert Parker gives this port 96 points and says, "Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous."

Graham’s Port was founded in 1820 by Scottish brothers William and John Graham in Oporto, Portugal. The brothers, who already came from a successful entrepreneurial family, dedicated themselves to producing a line of fine vintage Ports. In 1890, they became one of the first Port quintas (estates) to source fruit from the upper Douro Valley and established the property Quinta dos Malvedos. The quality of the grapes from this vineyard is a major contribution to the finesse of their Ports. In that same year, the brothers opened the Graham’s Lodge in Vila Nova di Gaia, to store and showcase the wines. Vintages of Graham’s Port became famous for their structure and elegance, particularly 1909, 1912, 1924, 1927 and especially 1948, a wine Jancis Robinson said was among the finest she’d ever tasted. In 1970, Graham’s was sold to the Symington family, who themselves had a legacy of quality Port production dating back centuries. They have upheld the traditions begun by the Graham’s and continue to produce outstanding Ports as sole proprietors of the operation. Aside from vintage, Graham’s also produces Ports in every style from Tawny to Ruby, Late Bottle Vintage (LBV), Crusted and White, as well as their value release the Six Grapes.  Read less
