Graham Beck Syrah the Ridge 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

Graham Beck is a giant of the South African wine scene and has led the country's thundering success since the end of Apartheid in 1994, a year that saw Nelson Mandela toast his inauguration as President with a flute of Beck's Brut NV. Fizz remains a key part of the Beck portfolio and the sparkling wines are rightly recognised as among the best in the New World. Based in Robertson, a second cellar in Franschhoek has been built to further extend the company's potential. Pieter 'Bubbles' Ferreira retains overall control of the winemaking with the talented Erika Obermeyer and Irene Waller heading up the Franschhoek and Robertson wineries respectively. The Ridge Vineyard is a low-yielding 10 year old Shiraz vineyard on the eastern slopes of the Rooiberg on Graham Beck Wines Robertson farm. The soil is unique with a thirty centimetre layer of red Karoo earth on a limestone base. This Shiraz displays a deep, rich plummy colour and a bouquet that's intensely warm and smoky in character, with distinctive hints of spice. The fruit emerges beautifully and is in superb symmetry with the wood on the palate. Enjoy with a rich casserole, a hearty stew or any other full flavoured dish.
