Graham Beck Rhona Muscadel 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Graham Beck is a giant of the South African wine scene and has led the country's thundering success since the end of Apartheid in 1994, a year that saw Nelson Mandela toast his inauguration as President with a flute of Beck's Brut NV. Fizz remains a key part of the Beck portfolio and the sparkling wines are rightly recognised as among the best in the New World. Based in Robertson, a second cellar in Franschhoek has been built to further extend the company's potential. Pieter 'Bubbles' Ferreira retains overall control of the winemaking with the talented Erika Obermeyer and Irene Waller heading up the Franschhoek and Robertson wineries respectively. This great little dessert wine is made from 100% Muscat de Frontignan from a 2ha, 22-year-old vineyards, producing 6 tons per hectare. The grapes are lightly crushed, destalked and left on the skins for natural enzymatic fermentation. After 3 days the wild fermentation is stopped with the addition of neutral grape spirits. It then rests in a stainless steel tank for 1 year for the spirits and grape flavour to integrate. Rich straw colour with delicate orange rind flavours and grapey freshness on the palate. The wine has an amazing rich lengthy finish.
