Graffigna Elevation Red Blend Reserve Centenario 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

20% Malbec, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah, 20% Bonarda, 20% Tannat A bit sour on the nose with black fruit, toasty spice and some muddy herbal notes and just a hint of peppery spice. A touch of sweetness greets the palate followed by rich black fruit, dates, and cedar in the mouth that’s supported by dry and slightly oaky tannins. The fruit shows nice mulberry and dark red berry notes on the palate, then the oak returns as this transitions to a modest and dry finish. Dark and mysterious, there’s too much oak here for my palate but I can see the appeal of this moderately austere wine. 85pts

Graffigna, with a winemaking tradition that spans 140 years, has the honor of being the oldest winery in the Argentine province of San Juan, the second oldest in the country and the first winery in Argentina to sell branded wines. Today, Graffigna is one of Pernod Ricard's four global wine brands and iconic of Argentina's progress as a quality wine producer. In recent years, as part of our philosophy of continuous improvement, Graffigna launched a viticulture study and development process in San Juan with the support of an international team of experts led by Victor Marcantoni and with the consultancy of renowned winemaker Phil Laffer. An ambitious investment plan was also deployed. In order to increase production and storage capacity, cutting-edge agricultural technology, equipment and production techniques were incorporated.   In 2009, Graffigna was named "Winery of the Year" in the USA by The Critics Challenge and Graffigna Centenario became the most awarded Malbec of 2007-2008. Moreover, in 2010, Graffigna's Malbecs (Grand Reserve and Centenario) were awarded with 90 points by acclaimed critic Robert Parker. Today, Graffigna continues to consistently embrace innovation without relinquishing its rich history and tradition. Read less
