Goldschmidt Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Yoeman Vineyard Alexander Valley 2012

External Review by We Speak Wine:

TASTING NOTES: Deep garnet; aromas of dark plum, black cherry, cassis, nutmeg, vanilla and dark chocolate. Shows concentrated flavors of black cherry, blackberry, plum, cassis, spice, tobacco, and chocolate. Rich and full-bodied, nice wood framing, sumptuous texture, supple tannin finish. My favorite vineyard from an exceptional vintage. VINTAGE NOTES: This was the vintage that everybody thought was the Goldilocks year. 2012 was not too hot, not too cold, and just right with sun and fog. Near-ideal bud break, steady flowering, and a very even fruit set. A lengthy stretch of warm days and cool and often foggy nights during the long summer months. Grapes achieved optimal ripeness with fantastic quality. Skins were pretty thick so I'm guessing it will be a high-structure year. About 95 percent of the grapes were already picked when more than an inch of rain finally hit in late October. Alexander Valley and Napa Valley were exceptional and the wines should result in them being in the top 5 vintages over the last 20 years for both valleys. Comparison with 2001, 2002 and 2007 will be easy to do. - Nick Goldschmidt Aging: 32 Months, Taransaud Allier Tight Grain, 85% New TA: 6.1 g/Liter pH: 3.67 Alcohol: 14.3% ** Only 2 in Stock **

This extremely rare and exciting Cabernet is produced by the man who headed up wine making at Simi vineyards for more than a decade. Nick Goldschmidt produced millions of cases of fine wine at Simi, Clos du Bois, Buena Vista, William Hill, Atlas Peak and many more renowned California wineries. Goldschmidt Vineyards is all his own. This is where he creates extraordinary small lot wines from the vineyards and terroir that he knows so well. The Yoeman vineyard where the 100% Cabernet grapes for this wine are sourced is situated on a terraced knoll, just east of the town of Geyserville and is comprised primarily of a gravelly loam soil. The slope direction provides excellent exposure of the grape clusters and allows for long “hang time.” This provides perfectly formed bunches of grapes that possess optimal ripeness and fully developed varietal character. The unique combination of exposure, soil conditions, drainage, and mature vines produces wines of rich, concentrated flavors that showcase the true character of the region, the vineyard, and the varietal. The grapes are fermented slowly over four weeks and the wine is aged in French Taransaud oak barrels for 26 months. Botlled unfined and unfiltered. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 93 points saying "A rich, decadent and generous wine, 100% varietal, this is both floral and fruity, bright in cherry and raspberry alongside herbal cedar and vanilla. A medium weight surrounds softly integrated tannins, leading the way to an explosive, juicy finish. This is a classic example of the appellation’s prowess in approachable power."
