The Katherine Goldschmidt Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 is a single vineyard Cab from the thirty acre Crazy Creek Vineyard just east of the town of Geyserville in Alexander Valley, which the Goldschmidts have farmed since 1989. Named after winery owner Nick Goldschmidt’s daughter Katherine, in a line of three wines each named after one of his daughters, this is a 100% Cab wine aged 18 months in oak. Nick Goldschmidt, father and winemaker, is known for creating rich, powerful, and delicious wines that cost upwards of seventy dollars so it’s interesting to see how this lower priced Goldschmidt delivers. So let’s take it for a swirl. On opening, this is a classic California cab, if on the lighter side. There’s juicy berries, spiciness, and an immediate backbone of toasty oak. Decanting for an hour produced surprise and delight as the wine “came together” for us. This is the first Cab I’ve tasted where citrus played a role. The wine opened up splendidly to reveal a festive medley of candied orange peel, chocolate and holiday spices. The wine paired so very well with a steak off the grill and a side of Caesar salad and baked potato – talk about an American classic! The spicy component in this Cab makes it a sure bet to go nicely with red meat. At a price of $11.59 at Costco, this wine is an absolute steal. With all this in mind, this wine gets a highly recommended rating as a great value wine that punches above its weight class. Wineshout.com

All the parts are here to make a good Cabernet. Flavors of chocolate, blackberry jam, cassis and smoky oak are framed in rich tannins. But the wine needs a little time to knit together. Should be drinking well by spring 2014. It's a great value for the price, and easy to find with more than 15,000 cases produced. - S.H. The thirty acre Crazy Creek Vineyard lies just east of the town of Geyserville in the renowned Alexander Valley wine region. Its old, low vigor vines consistently produce Cabernet Sauvignon with more power and depth than typically found in the appellation. Stylistically, Nick strives for full body and power in the mouth with wood behind the fruit. Few single vineyard Cabernets are offered at such a reasonable price.
