Goats Do Roam Wine Company White Rhone Blend Goats Do Roam White 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

There’s no stopping Fairview owner/vintner Charles Back when his interest in a creative, entrepreneurial project is piqued. It all started with a suggestion by a wine buyer ... the man humorously suggested the vinification of a Rhône-style blend called "Goats do Roam". Back, already known for his panache with Shiraz and always looking for new styles of wine to woo adventurous and discerning consumers, took the ball and ran with it. Thus was born, in 1999, what was for the South African wine scene an innovative blend using Rhône varieties such as Shiraz, Cinsault, Carignan and Mourvèdre with a dash of local Pinotage, which Back had sourced from various vineyards (his own and others) around Paarl and Malmesbury. But, despite the humour of the packaging, the content of the bottle impressed with its quality, combining rich complexity with great drinkability. Since then, Goats do Roam has expanded into a fully fledged wine company with a range of nine whimsically named wines. This white blend is a vibrant, pale golden colour with peach and tropical aromas. Melon and ripe apricot flavours, with fresh acidity and a crisp finish.

Goats do Roam is a South African wine company, based in the Paarl region of the Cape winelands. Founded in 1999 by Fairview owner Charles Back, the company's wines continue to be produced at the Fairview cellar, under the guidance of Back's experienced team. The winemaking focus is on blended styles, incorporating grapes from vineyards in a number of winemaking regions. Initially inspired by the roaming Saanen goats on the Fairview farm, the Goats do Roam winemakers draw inspiration from various regions while still aiming to express a truly South African wine style. The range of wines has been widely acclaimed for its excellent value and consistent quality as well as the brands innovative, quirky approach to the market. After enjoying early success in the US market, the wines of the Goats do Roam Wine Company are now available in many parts of the world. The goats do roam! Following the careful selection of fine fruit from the top vineyards in the area, the grapes used in our Goats do Roam wines are transported to the Fairview cellar in Paarl, where the wines are produced and bottled. We harvest from the last week in January through to late March. During this period our modern, well-equipped Winery processes over 1500 tons of grapes. Modern wine making techniques coupled to traditional care enable us to depict both the varietal character and terroir of our vines. Read less

This is a dry fruity wine is an excellent value for under $10.00. To be truthful I got this wine because of the label of "Goats Do Roam" but I was happily surprised. The white wine consists of 68 percent Viognier grapes, 17 percent Roussanne for velvety goodness and 15 percent Grenache blanc. A nice blended wine.

The sweet, ripe peach and gingersnap flavors end with a light touch; for grilled fish.

This vibrant pale golden colored wine blended of 54% Viognier, 40% Grenache Blanc, and 6% Roussanne provides rich inviting aromas of peach, pear, citrus and floral fragrances. Melon and ripe apricot flavors burst with fresh acidity on the palate leading to a crisp refreshing finish with hints of honeysuckle.
