Round and ripe, with plum and berry flavors, and sweet smoke on the finish. Straightforward but engaging. A blend of Pinotage, Shiraz, Cinsault, Grenache and others. Drink now.

As a wandering Capricorn, I have not yet been led to South Africa where this goat hails from, but I suggest you imagine yourself on a new adventure, taking risks, and experiencing life! Look through the beautiful glass of garnet before you. Smell the cherry and currant. Is there a hint of something else inside? The first sip reveals a light texture followed by an intense rush of flavor, ending unexpectedly dry. Your horoscope reads, "Discoveries lead to simple pleasures under $10."

The grapes were harvested from vineyards in Paarl, Pedeberg and Malmesbury. The grapes are mostly sourced from dry-farmed old bush vines. These are mostly vineyards with small cropping levels. The resulting wine has considerable concentration.

The 2000 Goats Do Roam Red, a blend of 33% Pinot Noir, 22% Shiraz, 13% Cinsault, 13% Grenache, 10% Carignan, 5% Gamay Noir, and 4% Mourvedre, exhibits a beautiful cherry, raspberry, and blackberry nose. Light to medium-bodied, supple, and easy to drink, this is a juicy, spicy cherry and pepper-flavored wine. It is expressive, thirst-quenching, and delicious. Drink it over the next two years. This wine is a superb value.

South Africa's Western Cape is known for producing fresh, value-focused wine year after year. This is no exception. Soft and light, the wine offers jammy cherries, high-toned red fruits and delicate vanilla tones.

Light and easygoing, with cherry jam and high-toned vanilla notes. Clean and forward. Drink now.

    Winemaker's Notes:

There’s no stopping Fairview owner/vintner Charles Back when his interest in a creative, entrepreneurial project is piqued. It all started with a suggestion by a wine buyer ... the man humorously suggested the vinification of a Rhône-style blend called "Goats do Roam". Back, already known for his panache with Shiraz and always looking for new styles of wine to woo adventurous and discerning consumers, took the ball and ran with it. Thus was born, in 1999, what was for the South African wine scene an innovative blend using Rhône varieties such as Shiraz, Cinsault, Carignan and Mourvèdre with a dash of local Pinotage, which Back had sourced from various vineyards (his own and others) around Paarl and Malmesbury. But, despite the humour of the packaging, the content of the bottle impressed with its quality, combining rich complexity with great drinkability. Since then, Goats do Roam has expanded into a fully fledged wine company with a range of nine whimsically named wines. This Shiraz / Pinotage blend's nose is subdued in its youth, but shows clove and liquorice hints. It is medium bodied, with ripe fruit flavours. Elegant finish, with oak notes and red fruit following through.
