What to Expect

Zinfandel is considered America's own great indigenous grape, even though its origins lie on the Adriatic coast. Planted throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, Zinfandel is at its best in warm regions with cooler temperatures during harvest. The wines can range from off-dry Rosés, White Zinfandels, and light bistro styled wines, to big, rich powerful wines - even luscious wines for dessert bottling. The flavors range from plummy to raspberry, although deep blackberry fruit and brambly spice tones are most common.

Winemakers Notes

This Old Vine Zinfandel is crafted from grapes from 35 to 80 year old vines. Rich, dark berry flavors from the small grape clusters are balanced with French, American and Hungarian oak. Luscious layers of plum, pepper and chocolate provide a lingering and spicy finish. This wine pairs well with barbecue, pizza, hearty pastas, chili and ribs.

Reviews

As good as the 04, if not better. Stay away from the 06, even when decanted, falls flat and is disappointing. For the $, the 05 is a great deal.

Very good table wine, not too much tannis. Very rich, would go really well with steak and red meat, probably very good for bbq as well. It's nothing super special, but a great value.

Gnarly Head is a nice, simple wine that makes for a good night cap or an easy to drink introduction to someone who may not know whether or not they like wine. Relatively smokey with an easy finish. Worth its $10 price tag but not much more, IMO.
