Gnarly Head Zinfandel Lodi Old Vine 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel makes a bold statement at first sip. Our quest for outstanding Zinfandel led us down a country road into the heart of Lodi, California revealing a sea of gnarled, 35 – 80 year-old vines pruned in a special, mop-topped way called “head trained”. True gnarly heads, these old vines yield fewer grape clusters with smaller berries than trellised vines. These mighty little berries produce intense, bold wines that are deep in color with concentrated dark fruit flavors. Our Old Vine Zinfandel has a gnarly core of rich, dark berry flavors with layers of spice, plum, pepper and vanilla balanced by light hint of toasted oak. Break out a bottle Gnarly Old Vine Zin and pair with BBQ pork ribs, moms favorite Chili or steak fajitas.

A passion for Zinfandel and a desire to make great Zin, led our winemaking team to Lodi, California's zinfamous appellation. A passion for Zinfandel and a desire to make great Zin, led our winemaking team to Lodi, California's zinfamous appellation. But it was a sense of fun - wine should be fun, accessible, easy to understand and enjoy - that led us to create Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin. The sight of the free standing "head trained" vines found in older vineyards in California was the inspiration for Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin. These 35 to 80 year old vines have twisted old trunks and branches that spread out in all directions sprouting leaves like unruly umbrellas - truly gnarly heads. The grapes these old vines produce are small and few, but offer big flavor! But Zinfandel is not the only California grape that can be Gnarly. Our winemaking team selects grapes from some of the best vineyards in Northern California for our Gnarly Head Chardonnay, Merlot and Cab (Cabernet Sauvignon). Gnarly Head wines are easy to drink and pair with food, and made to bring people together, to enjoy with laughter, to celebrate past escapades and future adventures. Cheers! Read less

Sweet on the nose with strong notes of vanilla, ginger, toasted coconut and cherry cola. Smooth and supple in the mouth, though the acids do stick out a bit here on the palate. There are some attractive briary and balsamic flavors on the palate, along with light raspberry fruit, then this picks up a bit wood spice on the backend before wrapping up with a brief, clean finish. The tannins seem a bit dry on the finish, and while the wines is pleasant in the mouth, as the fruit fades this will probably just turn dryer and tougher. 84pts

Sweet and spicy with strawberry jam fruit framed with toast, herb, and anise seed notes. Air gives this a decidedly darker sheen, revealing more toasty oak and dark, oily spice notes. Very smooth on entry, a little soft, with an easy to appreciate, slightly creamy mid-palate. The fruit is fresh and full of red currant and cherry notes underplayed with gentle spice tones. Creamy vanilla-laced cherry dominates the modest finish with a nice gentle spice tone on the finale. I would like to see a bit more brightness here but this is popularly styled. 87pts

A nice lashing of oak greets the nose and is followed by really ripe mango aromas that settle under earthy black fruit and fruit wood notes. Smooth and integrated in the mouth, this shows just an edge of peach fuzz tannins which help add some detail and contour to the palate. The acidity is also well judged, making this an easy to appreciate mouthful of blackberry and briary fruit. Pretty well balanced and supple, this is a crowd-pleaser without being a fruit bomb. 86pts

I took both - zin and cab Gnarly 2011 to compare. Zin seems to be more fresh and fun then cab... And cab is deep and doomed. both are good but I'd choose cab next time.

Nice garnet color, soil and dark berry aromas, earthy plum taste, nice round mouthfeel with a peppery tang on lingering finish.

I got this at Lowe's Foods, on sale, for 9.99. It looks like I could get it cheaper somewhere else. I am definitely going to do that because this was one tasty MFer. Very fruity with a tinge of cinnamon. The aroma was very light.

Great black cherry notes. Delicious for the price. I was very surprised. Went well with filet, asparagus, portabellas, and crusty bread!

Old Zinfandel vines with thick, twisted gnarled trunks and vines shooting up and out in all directions are the inspiration for Gnarly Head Zin. The grapes are sourced from vineyards in Lodi, primarily the Mokelumne River area, with some the oldest Zinfandel vines in all of California. 35 to 80 year old vines are hand-harvested for this rich, dense, jammy Zin. The wine is aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels, giving it a distinct spiciness to complement the pure fruit and making it an ideal match for zesty foods. This 2012 is a Wine Enthusiast Magazine Best Buy. They said "Soft, spicy and jammy, this is rich in clove and big-hearted blackberry fruit. Easy to like and pleasantly affordable, it’ll pour well for parties and other occasions where a bold, crowd-pleasing red wine is in order." It also won a Silver Medal in the Critics Choice Wine Competition. They said "Smooth, berry, plum, cola flavors glide over the tongue and finish with mellow tannins." A great value for a quality Zin!

From 35- to 80-year-old vines, this is sweetly ripe without being weighty. Pleasant acidity carries bright red fruit flavors and gives the wine length. A simple, delicious Lodi red.
