Gnarly Head Zinfandel Lodi Old Vine 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel makes a bold statement at first sip. Our quest for outstanding Zinfandel led us down a country road into the heart of Lodi, California revealing a sea of gnarled, 35 – 80 year-old vines pruned in a special, mop-topped way called “head trained”. True gnarly heads, these old vines yield fewer grape clusters with smaller berries than trellised vines. These mighty little berries produce intense, bold wines that are deep in color with concentrated dark fruit flavors. Our Old Vine Zinfandel has a gnarly core of rich, dark berry flavors with layers of spice, plum, pepper and vanilla balanced by light hint of toasted oak. Break out a bottle Gnarly Old Vine Zin and pair with BBQ pork ribs, moms favorite Chili or steak fajitas.

A passion for Zinfandel and a desire to make great Zin, led our winemaking team to Lodi, California's zinfamous appellation. But it was a sense of fun - wine should be fun, accessible, easy to understand and enjoy - that led us to create Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin. The sight of the free standing "head trained" vines found in older vineyards in California was the inspiration for Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin. These 35 to 80 year old vines have twisted old trunks and branches that spread out in all directions sprouting leaves like unruly umbrellas - truly gnarly heads. The grapes these old vines produce are small and few, but offer big flavor! But Zinfandel is not the only California grape that can be Gnarly. Our winemaking team selects grapes from some of the best vineyards in Northern California for our Gnarly Head Chardonnay, Merlot and Cab (Cabernet Sauvignon). Gnarly Head wines are easy to drink and pair with food, and made to bring people together, to enjoy with laughter, to celebrate past escapades and future adventures. Cheers! Read less

A nice lashing of oak greets the nose and is followed by really ripe mango aromas that settle under earthy black fruit and fruit wood notes. Smooth and integrated in the mouth, this shows just an edge of peach fuzz tannins which help add some detail and contour to the palate. The acidity is also well judged, making this an easy to appreciate mouthful of blackberry and briary fruit. Pretty well balanced and supple, this is a crowd-pleaser without being a fruit bomb. 86pts

Sweet and spicy with strawberry jam fruit framed with toast, herb, and anise seed notes. Air gives this a decidedly darker sheen, revealing more toasty oak and dark, oily spice notes. Very smooth on entry, a little soft, with an easy to appreciate, slightly creamy mid-palate. The fruit is fresh and full of red currant and cherry notes underplayed with gentle spice tones. Creamy vanilla-laced cherry dominates the modest finish with a nice gentle spice tone on the finale. I would like to see a bit more brightness here but this is popularly styled. 87pts

Earthy, meaty aromas. Potting soil. Smooth with a hint of spice.

Hints of vegetal asparagus. a bit heavier and deep tomatoey on the nose. taste is much lighter and surprisingly so. almost like sweet tea it's so light.

Very earthy aroma, flavor is smoky and full of concentrated fruit. Suitable for drinking alone; paired very well with grilled ribeye. Pairing it with blue cheese intensified the fruit flavor. Definitely a great bargain!

Good smooth wine, bit of an acidy bite and spicy finish. Okay, not fabulous. For the price, it's nice.

I made some hearty Turkey Meatballs and needed an equally hearty wine to pair with my dinner. Well, I didn’t need the wine, I wanted the wine. On the nose this Zin is oaky, peppery and has an aroma of dark chocolate spiced with bitter coffee. It’s actually quite complex on the palate and I had to shut my eyes for a moment and take a few sips to get everything right in my head. Very smooth and velvety and tastes like dark, sweet chocolate with syrupy cherries. On drinking more it becomes very jammy and opens up with aniseed and blossoms with rich berry fruits. This is a full-bodied zin with a warm long finish. A lovely find at a wonderful price and a wine I will be buying more of this Fall and Winter!

First of all this is California cabernet sauvignon like. It has a nice clear color. This is a big, bold, and dry bottle of wine. On the nose, I get ripe black fruits, blackberries, a hint of strawberry, jammy flavor (which is Zin-like), a hint of vanilla. HOWEVER, the oak is all over the place! It is very oaky. On palate, i get something very much consistent with what I get on the nose. Nice black fruits, jammyness, there is also a hidden sense of pepper. Surprisingly, this wine is off balance! It has acidity that is not compatible with the character of this wine. It is too acidic to the point where you feel the acidity is at one place and the flavor and bouquet are at another place! The oak and acidity are off-balancing this wine. I gave it 2 stars taken into account that you pay $6 for it, which is acceptable, IMHO. I would consider buying it again. I am 83 on this effort. Happy drinking!

Very nice fruit and spice flavors. Not much to smell at first.

This brash, lusty, immature Zin is brimming with fresh acids and primary blackberry, cherry and blueberry flavors. This is a wine that will benefit from another year of age.

A soft, approachable wine whose pleasure is in its extreme dryness. Shows peppery flavors of tobacco, wild blackberries, bacon and anise.

Robust berry flavors and exotic spice notes from the small grape clusters are balanced with French, American and Hungarian oak, which creates heady layers of vanilla and chocolate and a lingering finish. - Winery

Ripe and racy, with modest baked cherry, toasty herb and pepper flavors. Drink now through 2015.
