What to Expect

Zinfandel is considered America's own great indigenous grape, even though its origins lie on the Adriatic coast. Planted throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, Zinfandel is at its best in warm regions with cooler temperatures during harvest. The wines can range from off-dry Rosés, White Zinfandels, and light bistro styled wines, to big, rich powerful wines - even luscious wines for dessert bottling. The flavors range from plummy to raspberry, although deep blackberry fruit and brambly spice tones are most common.

Great daily drinker here from Gnarly Head. Don't let the vintage fool you - this is a smooth drinker! Rich berry flavors you'd expect from a Zin, but aging in three different types of oak has layered on some nice notes of vanilla, pepper, and a hint of licorice. At around $10 a bottle, you can have it with pizza, BBQ, pasta - whatever your pleasure!

I have had this wine numerous times - it is easy to fine in TN and it tastes good! The nose is of a black cherry and earthy. The color is a very dark red to black. there are tannins in the tast that provide a little after taste of black cherries..

Okay, I really loved this one. I only picked it up because I have not had and Old Vine Zin in a while and it was on sale. I have been sipping on this one all weekend. I had a glass with chocolate and I am having a glass right now with pizza. Worked well in both cases and I am sure it would work well with an elegant dinner, as well.

This is always one of the first Zins I recommend to people. It's very approachable, and is a great example I feel of old vine Zinfandel-y goodness. I've paired this up with many meals, and enjoy drinking it on it's own. Certainly a strong stand-by.

Newbie in wines here, so don't expect any detailed info on the taste of the wine. ;-) I agree with the others about the taste and what it's suited for. I made a red wine sauce out of 1/3 of the contents and had it with roast beef and fresh potatoes pre-boiled and baked in the oven with parmesan cheese. The sauce turned out to be the best red wine sauce I've had, a lot thanks to the wine I think.

Candied fruit, plums, spice with smooth finish. I find it a very different Zin...more fruit forward than most I have tried. I find it better on its own than a food pairing. But if you are looking for a pairing, perhaps a nice bbq steak.

It's a $10 bottle of Zin--and for that price, it's big, robust, flavorful, and overall satisfying. Gnarly Head is one of those California fruitbomb Zins, and if that's your thing (it is mine!), it's worth checking out--especially if you don't have a lot of money to spend but still want a nice drinking, powerful wine.

Ok, got around to drinking this nice $10 wine. A well balanced fruity Zin. Plum dominates the more muted blackberries. Not to sound like a total retard, but I also get a hint of grape. Asia (thats the other 1/2 of this wine rating duo) feels the bitterness is a bit much. Probably too heavy to drink till you're drunk, but a great meal wine.

I found this wine to be a great powerhouse of flavor. Slightly astringent in the finish, but overall deep and complex flavors.....plummy and jammy. I would pair it with hearty roasted meats or even aged steak. Can definitely hold up against bright and bold flavors.

as a college kid looking for affordable but enjoyable wines i must say i was pleased to find gnarly head zin. i was also pleased that it goes well with some less than healthy college eating habits. some nice dark fruit flavor and a good spice to it.

I first had this at a restaurant, and immediately had to run out to find it. Given the mark up at restaurants, I was pleasantly surprised at how inexpensive it was. This is a smooth, easy to drink wine with notes of cherries and pepper. I really love this one!
