To create the new Gnarly Head Authentic Red, Bud looked first to the Mokelumne River AVA, home to some of the oldest and most respected Zinfandel vineyards in Lodi. Working closely with several established growers there, he selected individual blocks that best exemplified the essence of Lodi Zinfandel. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon thrive to the east of the Mokelumne River, in the foothills of Lodi, in an AVA known as Borden Ranch. Here Bud selected the gnarliest Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah he could find to blend with the Zinfandel.

Authentic Red is a rowdy blend based on Zinfandel. Merlot and Cabernet with a splash of Syrah. It has a juicy core of blackberry, plum, and black cherry with layers of spice and chocolate.
Old Zinfandel vines with thick, twisted gnarled trunks and canes shooting up and out in all directions are the inspiration for Gnarly Head. This is a new wine from them, and it's already won awards in four different competitions; silver and gold medals in the Indy International Wine Competition, the San Diego International Wine Competition, the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and the San Francisco International Wine Competition. It's a red blend with old vine Zin as its core. The grapes are sourced from vineyards in Lodi, primarily the Mokelumne River area, where 35 to 80 year old vines are hand-harvested for this rich, dense, jammy Zin. The blend is 50% Zinfandel, 20% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petite Sirah, 3% Syrah and the wine is aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels, giving it a distinct spiciness to complement the massively juicy core of ripe fruit flavors. It's mouth-filling and rich and of course coming form Gnarly Head, it's a great value!

Gnarly Head Authentic Red is a big, bold Zinfandel-led red blend that hails from a true grit American town: Lodi, California, where gnarled, old vines are pruned in a wild, mop-topped way called “head trained” – our true gnarly heads. These heroic old vines produce scant clusters of small-berried fruit, resulting in intensely flavored, authentic wines with concentrated dark fruit flavors. To create our new Authentic Red, we’ve blended our densely flavorful Zinfandel with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah to deliver a massively juicy core of ripe blackberry and spice.
