Gloria Ferrer Carneros Cuvee 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2001 vintage gave us an abundant crop that we thinned heavily. After a dry winter, we received just enough rain in February to bring us to normal levels. After a warm day or two in June, temperatures stayed in the 80s and low 90s through the growing season. Harvest was orderly and many vineyard blocks ripened slowly, allowing fruit to ripen fully while maintaining bright acidities. TASTING NOTES A complex interplay of subtly nuanced berry and cherry aromas marries with mature yeast characters and a trace of graphite in the nose of this well-developed yet remarkably fresh sparkling wine. The wine holds in exquisite balance full, round, abundant flavors of citrus, ripe apple, spice and toast with vibrant acidity that refreshes the palate throughout an extremely long finish. FOOD AFFINITIES This wine matches beautifully with a variety of appetizers ranging from marinated olives and pizetta to fried calamari or seared scallops. Enjoy with smoked fish or aged Gouda cheese, steamed mussels or salt cod acalao.Seasoning affinities include tarragon, citrus peel and toasted nuts.

Lovely nose, complex and floral with sweet pear fruit turning spicy with a hint of white pepper over candied almond dried apple peel, and candle wax nuance. Lightly creamy on entry though with big flavors in the mouth. The mousse is a little aggressive but this has some fabulous layered flavors of lime, lemon curd, deep slightly mushroomy notes, cashew, brazil nut and light vanilla accents. It’s really quite complex and long, rich with umami, and rather elegant finishing with a nice edge of nougat. I love the savory flavors here. 93pts

Superb sparkling wine for the price. The wine is a mix of two thirds Pinot Noir and one third Chardonnay. It starts off with a very bright and fresh nose which translates into the taste. A real mouthful up front that develops into a complex apple flavor with some citrus and spice. Long finish that is not extremely dry. Very drinkable sparkling that should suit a wide range of palettes.

Wine Spectator ReviewRated 93 HIGHLY RECOMMENDEDThis sparkling wine is fresh and vibrant, yet with a core of rich, luscious fruit. Aromas of Asian pear, rose water and lemon curd lead to layered flavors of fresh ginger, pippin apple and cinnamon that finish on a showy note. Drink now through 2013.Wine Enthusiast ReviewRated 93Royal Cuvee is usually Gloria Ferrer's best bubbly, and so it is with this bottling, a worthy followup to the past several vintages. Very finely structured, it shows appealing flavors of cherries, citrus fruits and vanilla, and is so rich, it's almost like a table wine. Addictively good now. Watch it change as it warms in the glass.Wine Tasting NotesA complex interplay of subtly nuanced berry and cherry aromas marries with mature yeast characters and a trace of graphite in the nose of this well-developed yet remarkably fresh sparkling wine. The Royal Cuve is a prestige bottling that showcases the superb quality of the grapes grown on our 335-acre estate vineyard in Carneros. Made only from the first pressing of grapes hand-picked from our vineyards this classic Brut blend of two-thirds Pinot Noir and one-third Chardonnay offers the delicacy and exuberance of perfectly ripe fruit well-integrated with mature complexities derived from over five years of aging on the yeast. The 2001 vintage gave us an abundant crop that we thinned heavily. After a dry winter we received just enough rain in February to bring us to normal levels. After a warm day or two in June temperatures stayed in the 80s and low 90s through the growing season. Harvest was orderly and many vineyard blocks ripened slowly allowing fruit to ripen fully while maintaining bright acidities.
