What to Expect

The classic Bordeaux blends rely on either Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon for the bulk of the wine with additions of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec helping to add complexity, color, body and structure to the finished wine.

Winemakers Notes

A classic blend in the style that Glen Carlou have been making since 1989. This wine is smooth and rich with a prominent fruit character and ripe tannins. It is ideal with rich food and red meat dishes. Enjoy now, but the classic structure will allow the wine to mature well for at least ten years. It is a deep red with an intense and brilliant hue. Aromas are of sandalwood, cloves, fresh blackcurrant and dark bramble fruit. There are ripe tannins and clean flavours of intense blackberries and spice. Lingering and elegant on the finish, with mouth-filling complexity.

Reviews

Had this as part of a wine flight at a restaurant last night, and this was the standout of the three wines I tasted. It is a Bordeaux style wine, with Cabernet the dominant varietal. Cassis and dark fruit with some smokey aromas. Complex and balanced, with a nice long finish.

in a way, this kind of wine is the Holy Grail... A medium bodied bordeaux blend that you can drink without serious food, or at least, without a bloody great piece of meat. It has the nose of a left bank second wine - black cherries, whiff of cedar - gives you that Bordeaux hit, but the tannins don't come down like the Germans taking back Alsace in 1940. Which is a good thing. A fine effort, especially for the e12.99 I found it for. They say South Africa is all about the whites, but with a few more of these, they could nick a chunk of the market before the apathetic Bordelaise know what's what.
