Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Villero 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Tight and clay driven on the nose, which also features aromas of rosehips, hot tar, fennel and wild strawberry. This is a pretty powerful wine, deep round and balsamic with very clear, lovely minerality, balsamic and floral highlights to the rusty red fruit all coming together in a light tight finish. There’s a beautiful ripeness to the tannins here with a little baking spice on the moderately long finish. This is decisive and elegant. 93pts

Since time immemorial Nebbiolo has been the most highly-prized vine and the wine-growing emblem of Alba and the Langa, and when it is matched with a great wine-making terroir it is capable of expressing itself at sublime levels in wines of remarkable personality, intense bouquet, great smooth tannins, and outstanding possibilities of evolution and resistance over time. The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for more than a century and a half, first as farmers running the Manescotto estate in the village of La Morra for the marchesa Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo, and then on their own property since the late 1800s. Roses and prunes in alcohol greet the nose with some minor background tones of spicy herbs, this comes of as a bit simple and low intensity. In the mouth there is a nice fresh acidity and small tannins that give this a round freshness to the raspberry liquor fruit, though there is not much detail. The finish is clear and fresh with gaining tannins balanced by an edge of fruitiness. A solid but uninspiring showing. 87pts

This has an intense perfume of smoldering cigar, cigar ash, cherries in alcohol, prune and burnt orange rind. In the mouth there is a lot of weight here with rich fruit flavors and none of the bitter tannins many of these 2003's are showing. Bright and juicy with a lush, round feel and a backend built on extract and ripe tannins. this may lack the balance and purity of the very best vintages but is surely among the finest wines of the vintage. 2013-2028 92pts

Big dried fruit tones on the nose balanced by mint and rose petals with a soft suggestion of white chocolate sweetness – a bit smooth on the palate with good acids and softening tannins supporting rich raspberry fruit that covers the tannins nicely. This has that same sort of chocolatey sweetness on the palate as well and finishes a touch short 89pts

Huge dried fruit tones on the nose with notes of menthol, asphalt, deep, toasty black spices, tar, and a fine rose stem top note – On the palate this is rich and velvety with fine grained tannins and lovely, perky acids filling the mouth wit dense, juicy fruit. This really is powerful yet remains elegant with impressive depth and complexity. The finish is layered with excellent rosehip, licorice, forest floor, and spice tones and very long. 95pts

Wow, what an ever changing nose full of smoke, minerals, tarry herbs, spicy herbs with notes of turmeric, fenugreek, roses and a hint of sweet onion. In the mouth this is brilliantly ripe yet so precise with knife edge balance that give the tight yet seamless fruit a real sense of finesse. The raspberry fruit gives a racy impression across the mid-palate with some peach pit tones on the backend that leads to a long finish. Really special purity to this wine. 2014-2045 96pts

2001 G. Mascarello Sant Stefano Di Perno – A first hit of rosemary is built apon a bed of spiciness and clay, the cherry and raspberry fruit is a bit stewy at first but freshens up with airing. Medium full in the mouth and front loaded with rich berry fruit that shows a hint of the stewiness that is found on the nose. Chalky and limestone across the bitter-sweet midpalate and full of lush tannins on the finish which has great focus and wonderful spiciness. This bottling has progressively gotten fresher and cleaner each time I’ve tried it and expect it to drink well early and develop very well

Decanted this wine several hours in advance. After 6 hours, the wine was still tight, but had a complex nose of bright fruit, strawberries, a bit charcoal and nice finish. After an additional two hours, the wine really opened up and kept going. A nose of oranges, plums and mint. The taste was very complex, with cherries that turned to plums, a touch of Glycerin, tar, and long finish with class and finesse. Wonderful.

Unbelievably delicious. It's been a while since I had this one, but I remember being floored by it. I've never had a Barolo that I haven't loved.

Strawberry jam dried lavender and hints of rosemary on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied with lightly stewed fruit velvety tannins and a subtle fresh strawberry aftertaste. This evolves wonderfully into a thoroughly balanced and pretty red. Best after 2011. -JS Wine Spectator.

Good full deep red. Perfumed cherry and black fruit aromas are complicated by camphor tar menthol and crushed herbs. Juicy and expressive delivering an impression of intensity without excess weight. Sour cherry and herb flavors are joined by a whiff of leather. Perhaps the least complex but most accessible of these 2004s finishing with rather suave tannins and a late note of bitter chocolate. The 2004 Barolo Villero presents a light to medium-bodied expression of Nebbiolo. Silky refined tannins support a soft core of sweet raspberries strawberries and spices. Although the wine put on weight in the glass this remains a relatively round approachable wine in this vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2024. -Antonio Galloni Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

The Villero vineyard site produces Nebbiolo that's more austere on the palate. With age, the fruit will express itself with a complexity that's typical from producers of this caliber. Classic aromas of rose petals, tar, spice and dark berries. Add to this the mineral component and you'll be asking for seconds.
