Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Villero 2001
Opened and decanted and poured back into open botlle 3 hours prior to dinner. Expected and wished for an old style barolo with gasoline and road tar among the scents and flavors. Surprised how soft and light this wine was from a top vintage and an old style producer. A nice wine, light cherry in color with a nose of truffle, spice and cherry. Nice sour cherry flavor intermixed with some sweetness of plum and licorice. No tannin to speak of.

2001 G. Mascarello Sant Stefano Di Perno – A first hit of rosemary is built apon a bed of spiciness and clay, the cherry and raspberry fruit is a bit stewy at first but freshens up with airing. Medium full in the mouth and front loaded with rich berry fruit that shows a hint of the stewiness that is found on the nose. Chalky and limestone across the bitter-sweet midpalate and full of lush tannins on the finish which has great focus and wonderful spiciness. This bottling has progressively gotten fresher and cleaner each time I’ve tried it and expect it to drink well early and develop very well
Candied on the nose with notes of coffee, cola and middle eastern spices- Supple in the mouth with small tannins and some bright raspberry fruit that has good acid drive through the mid-palate and gains nice red plumskin tones on the finish which shows a bit of heat and a nice roasted chestnut tone. 85pts
This opens with a wonderfully pure rose note that gains west clay and damp chalk tones. With air leather and pink peppercorn get added to the mix. In the mouth there is an underlying sweetness balanced by bright acids and stiff yet minor tannins. The cranberry and wild strawberry fruit is elegant and hints at a bit of spice and blood orange. the finish is moderately long with a cleansing, refreshingly astringent finale. A strong showing for this complete Barolo. Drink 2010-2022 91pts
Very dried grass notes on the nose, lots of dried herbs, sweet tarriness, spicy nettles with light cherry, perfumed and evolved. Incipient sweetness in the mouth, tons of ripe tannins, great acidity, lovely amarena, rose, and dried citrus peel in the mouth, Brisk and bright with a very long finish with dusty soil tones and a very perfumed and floral finish with treebark and dried rose. Drink 2010-2020
Jammy and spicy on the nose with a caramel edged medicinal tone. This smells frankly sweet. In the mouth it's nice enough with good acids but ultimately is shallow and hollow gaining some depth with the candied raspberry finish. 84pts
2001 G. Mascarello Monprivato – Notes of nettles, clay, oyster shells support the subtly stewy plum fruit at first, develops high-toned notes of chalk, tobacco leaf, and meat extract – lush entry is very earthy at first, shows great tannin integration, the fruit grows fresher and darker with notes of blackberry and tar, notes of menthol and limestone cut the fruit and lead to a very rich finish with long and lingering notes of anise and dark cherry. This also has moved from strength to strength and is looking to be a very complete Monprivato with great precision.
Wow, what an ever changing nose full of smoke, minerals, tarry herbs, spicy herbs with notes of turmeric, fenugreek, roses and a hint of sweet onion. In the mouth this is brilliantly ripe yet so precise with knife edge balance that give the tight yet seamless fruit a real sense of finesse. The raspberry fruit gives a racy impression across the mid-palate with some peach pit tones on the backend that leads to a long finish. Really special purity to this wine. 2014-2045 96pts
Unbelievably delicious. It's been a while since I had this one, but I remember being floored by it. I've never had a Barolo that I haven't loved.
The finest Barolo I've ever tasted, which is no mean feat..

The Villero vineyard site produces Nebbiolo that's more austere on the palate. With age, the fruit will express itself with a complexity that's typical from producers of this caliber. Classic aromas of rose petals, tar, spice and dark berries. Add to this the mineral component and you'll be asking for seconds.
