Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Santo Stefano di Perno 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

"Barrel sample. Scented and expressive with rose petals and cherry. Tastes like wild strawberries! Such delicacy and elegance of fruit. Finely stitched, etched tannins. Long and feminine. A pleasure to taste. Drink from 2013-2019. (TC)" - 17.5 out of 20 Points, Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages. Wine: "Nebbiolo grapes, from the Santo Stefano vineyard in Perno in Monforte d'Alba. The soil is Clayey-sandy, calcareous, composed of brown clay and grey sand of marine origin. The grapes are harvested by hand in the first two weeks in October. The wine is aged in large Slovenian oak casks for 36 months. This Barolo offers big, bold dark fruit flavors, accented by aomas of violets, menthol and sweet spices. This vineyard has been owned by the Mascarello family since 1989." - Importer Winery: "Since time immemorial Nebbiolo has been the most highly-prized vine and the wine-growing emblem of Alba and the Langa, and when it is matched with a great wine-making terroir it is capable of expressing itself at sublime levels in wines of remarkable personality, intense bouquet, great smooth tannins, and outstanding possibilities of evolution and resistance over time." "The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for more than a century and a half, first as farmers running the Manescotto estate in the village of La Morra for the marchesa Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo, and then on their own property since the late 1800s." - Winery

A little weedy and spicy on the nose with clay and forest floor nuances. There is an exotic citrus tone on the nose but overall a very loamy soil tone dominates. In the mouth this is packed with rich plum and cherry fruit, crisp tannins that lend a nice edge of austerity, and tones of peach pit and spice on the moderate finish. Very good and well done. 89pts

This is fantastic Dolcetto that balances approachability with the great structure of traditional wine-making. There is an intriguing geranium note to the nose that mingles deliciously with juicy, dark fruits.
