Food Pairings for Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato
had this wine on multiple occasions; dont plan to taste again for years. With very rare exceptions, I found little pleasure in drinking any 99s. This bottle however was particularly harsh. intensely tannic. Found it to have a synthetic or petrol quality on the nose
The nose showed sweet dark cherries and roses with spice and licorice. On the palate it was balanced and feminine with ripe cherry and spices, all driven by juicy acidity that brightened up the palate and nearly masked its underlying structure. The finish was fresh and juicy with inner floral notes lingering throughout.

Medium red with an amber edge. Complex pure aromas of wild red berries camphor tar dried rose tobacco and nutty oak. Very sweet on entry then silky deep and rich in the middle with impressive depth and breadth. Youthfully backward and currently hiding more fruit than it s showing but boasts superb incipient complexity and an explosively long ripely tannic finish. Stephen Tanzers IWC.
The 1999 Monprivato offers suggestions of flowers, sweet dark red fruit, licorice and minerals with notable weight on the palate, superb persistence and a final lingering note of sweetness on the fresh finish. It is an uncharachteristically rich and full bodied Monprivato at this stage and on this day it was absolutely amazing, dazzling tasters with its complexity, balance and sheer profoundness. As I have written in these pages before, Mascarello did not bottle his Riserva Ca' d'Morissio in 1999 and there can be no doubt that the Monprivato benefits from the added richness of the fruit that might have otherwise gone into the Riserva. Monprivato remains one of the great values in Barolo and this 1999 is another wine that future generations will look back on as one of the vintage's finest. I have been fortunate to taste older vintages of Monprivato on many occasions and this wine's aging potential is decades. The 1999 is a must-have wine. Medium red with an amber edge. Complex, pure aromas of wild red berries, camphor, tar, dried rose, tobacco and nutty oak. Very sweet on entry, then silky, deep and rich in the middle, with impressive depth and breadth. Youthfully backward and currently hiding more fruit than it's showing, but boasts superb incipient complexity and an explosively long, ripely tannic finish.
