Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 1998

Winemaker's Notes:

Perfumed and velvety. Rose petals, plenty of red fruit and a distinctly sweet character, and a hint of pine needles. The palate is equally delightful. Delicately structured, with silky tannins. Long and intense finish. A fantastic wine.

Since time immemorial Nebbiolo has been the most highly-prized vine and the wine-growing emblem of Alba and the Langa, and when it is matched with a great wine-making terroir it is capable of expressing itself at sublime levels in wines of remarkable personality, intense bouquet, great smooth tannins, and outstanding possibilities of evolution and resistance over time. The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for more than a century and a half, first as farmers running the Manescotto estate in the village of La Morra for the marchesa Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo, and then on their own property since the late 1800s. Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

just popped and poured. Nose opens slowly revealing a smoky personality with some dried cherry fruit, menthol, asphalt and rose petal, slightly volatile adding lift, subtle tobacco and mineral with a nuance of dried pine cone. Relatively expansive in the mouth with modest sized yet crisp structure, dark tarry flavors with notes of bitter rootsd from mid-palate to finish which adds some very seedy strawberry fruit and some slight tobacco vegetal notes. Finishes fairly long with supporting acidity. In the context of young monprivato this is lush and soft. Will improve, Peaking drinking window 2010-2017.

Popped and poured slightly acetic with a touch of anchovy, good sappy, pine resiny fruit underneath with smoke, loam and underbrush, very pinot like nose, little candied angelica root and licorice with a top note of espresso foam. Good balance of Tannin and fruits, leaning towards dried fruits with some tougher, drying tannins carrying through the back end to finish. Finishes medium long with citrussy, orange peel notes, rosehips, strawberry jam, and ash. Has some minty notes, the tannins have a very slight green, unripe edge to them and the wine has a hot vintage feel with slightly elevated alcohol. Nose turns quite herby with green ivy notes and a surprising base of caramelly butterscotch. The palate integrates somewhat but the fruit seems to be going into hiding leaving good acidty and those slightly green tannins behind. Finish lengthens and adds some tarry menthol and strawberry sed but remains a touch course. This needs some time to integrate and recover from the receding fruit. Probably best to try it again 2012-2020

Classic and expresive nebbiolo nose: roses, mint, balsamic. Open 2 hours before drinking, splash decanted. On the palate, sweet red berries, tar, mushrooms. Prominent tannins, good concentration. Palate never equaled the amoras. will hold the rest of a few years. A very nice, well-priced wine. Happy to have more.
