Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 1985

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Spicy and rich with subtle white pepper, Violette, nettle and mineral salts all enmeshed in rich, slightly jammy raspberry fruits. The fruit is still so plush in the mouth temperd and supported by fine tannins and great acids. there is an appley freshness and subtle astringency on the backend then funghi, tobacco, and dried rose notes on the long frutti di bosco finish. A great wine as usually though this bottle was a little less well knit. Still great 2009-2024 93pts

Since time immemorial Nebbiolo has been the most highly-prized vine and the wine-growing emblem of Alba and the Langa, and when it is matched with a great wine-making terroir it is capable of expressing itself at sublime levels in wines of remarkable personality, intense bouquet, great smooth tannins, and outstanding possibilities of evolution and resistance over time. The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for more than a century and a half, first as farmers running the Manescotto estate in the village of La Morra for the marchesa Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo, and then on their own property since the late 1800s. This offers up just a tremendous scent of fresh roses over meaty, slightly jammy fruit with spicy black cherry fruit and hints of lanolin and balsamic tones. On the palate it’s packed with fruit but feels a touch muted. There is the feel of great richness and the ripe tannins and unobtrusive acidity give this a roundness that is alluring but this bottle has no intensity of flavor and the finish is muted and short. Something wrong here but I’m not sure what. NR

Wow this nose has it going on, soaring aromatics of fresh leather, bay leaf, spices, menthol, camphor, a shred of tobacco, the nose of the night for it's exceptional combination of complexity and intensity. Soft and sweet in the mouth with it's bright almost raspberry toned fruit leading to a lush finish which has such wonderfully balanced acidity supporting crisp fruits through the long finish with it's hints of tar and mineral. Alot has been written, and discussed just last night, abouth 1985 as a vintage and it's unrealised promise. This perfectly cellared bottle illustrated just how perfectly ripe the vintage was in the right hands, this bottle had some of the ripest tannins possible perfectly balanced by acidity. It does lack a bit of complexity perhaps but only by a hair.

Opens with a slightly musky profile to the earthy core of fruit, this is a bit tight with aged notes of bone and old wood that lifts slowly to reveal deep notes of raspberry fruit, precise tones of dried grasses and hay, dried rose petal and tea notes that evolve into more of a tobacco tone. Big and rich in the mouth with superb, bright acidity highlighting the deep wild raspberry fruit that turns towards cherry lozenge on the backend. Great length and purity to this wine with very fine balance and perfectly ripe tannins that lend invisible support to the plush fruit. This is about as good as 1985 Barolo gets. 95pts

Here we are on a different level with the most hedonistic wine of the night. The nose jumps with jammy lingonberries, loamy earthy, raspberries and sweet anise notes. This is absolutely mouth filling and so full of glycerin as well as polished, soft tannins that it caresses the mouth. There is actually alot of tannin here and strong balancing acidity but they are subsumed in the lush red fruits that are counterbalanced by mineral and meaty/savory elements to the wine. Not breathtakingly complex but so simply delicious I want to steal the bottle! The finish is long and shimmering as it comes in waves then recedes before returning in ever diminishing pulses. Fantastic.

As usual a wonderful wine with a rich forest floor tone on the nose followed by minty and light clay notes with a lingering hint of cigar smoke. This is wonderfully fresh and soil driven on the nose with hints of camphor and icy mint setting off the precise spicy fruit. Entering with a wave of sweet, ripe fruit and then transitioning to a layered mid-palate with forest floor and spice toned framing the wild strawberry notes that play out on the finest in a coy and sneaky way. One of the best of 1985. 2009-2024 95pts
