Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 1979

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Well the perennial overachiever rounded out this flight. this opened with a truly classic nose. Clay and earth, a touch of brownie, confiture of frutti di boschi, absolutely gorgeous and the palate follow suit with sweetness, a round elegant appeal, balanced but just a touch austere offering great length and attractive mouth grab. This is richly fruited and spicy but just needs a bit of time to fill out on the back end. This offered up additional nuances of prosciutto, dense dark fruit, and peppery tones at the table though there was a touch of mustiness that creeped in around the edges. In the mouth this is fresh and lively with perfectly integrated acidity, deep flavors, and well managed tannins that are a bit drying but are so fine they give a sensation of flowing frictionless across the palate. The wine has the feel of Chamoix with it's combination of soft absorbency feeling almost luxurious. My WOTF

The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for more than a century and a half, first as farmers running the Manescotto estate in the village of La Morra for the marchesa Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo, and then on their own property since the late 1800s. This is remarkably fresh on the nose with a huge note of freshly picked strawberries, dirt, leaves and all. There is a slightly coffee edge here and nice notes of poppy seed with a touch of mint and camphor adding complexity. In the mouth this retain superb balance and freshness in a bright vein with subtly sweet cherry fruit and minor tannins that are none the less a bit aggressive, but in a good way. The cherry tones really gain depth and intensity on the palate and lead to a long zesty finish. This is more remarkable for it’s freshness and sumptuous core of fruit than it’s complexity but if it is simple it’s simply delicious. 2009- 2019 92pts
