Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Ca d'Morissio Riserva Monprivato 1995

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Lightly gamy on the nose with clean, deep, dark fruit framed with some leather notes. Quite elegant in the mouth, rather dry as well yet this remains light, with fine transparent fruits. The mid-palate is full of red fruits with a gentle astringent edge to them and tense soil driven length. The fruit on the finish is gentle but very appealing with a layering of bramble, raspberry, and earthy tones. A youthful wine still. 90pts

Since time immemorial Nebbiolo has been the most highly-prized vine and the wine-growing emblem of Alba and the Langa, and when it is matched with a great wine-making terroir it is capable of expressing itself at sublime levels in wines of remarkable personality, intense bouquet, great smooth tannins, and outstanding possibilities of evolution and resistance over time. The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for more than a century and a half, first as farmers running the Manescotto estate in the village of La Morra for the marchesa Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo, and then on their own property since the late 1800s. This retains a dark youthful color. Apon opening this offers up an intense nose of exotic spices and macerated flowers, a touch fumey with notes of bitter cocoa, tobacco, and hickory roasted pecans adding depth. After three hours the nose offers up an absolutely classic expression of intense macerated cherries, tar, menthol and floral notes that soar from the glass. Apn opening this is broad and powerful in the mouth with an initial blast of almost alcoholicly sweet strawberry fruit. Tons of tannins follow up quickly though with good supporting acidity adding freshness to the very tarry, mineral and cocoa tinged fruit on the midpalate. The finish offers up intense jolly rancher style sour plum fruit. After 3 hours one finds that same richness in the mouth and the tons of ripe tannins continue to be balanced by the high acidity but the midpalate offers even greater concentration of fruit with dark cherry tones accented by notes of earth, tar, and herbs. Impressive intensity with tons of body and showing well for such a young wine. Should be superb in time and vying for wine of the vintage. 2012-2030
