The narrow, winding road up Sage Canyon leads a traveler to one of Napa Valley's best kept secrets: Pritchard Hill, where mountain wineries such as Bryant Family, Colgin and Chappellet have carved a niche into the steep slopes. It's here that you will find the vineyards from which Girard's 93-point Cabernet was born. Girard was founded 35 years ago at the dawn of New Age winemaking in California. Since its inception, Girard Winery's quest has remained unchanged: to seek out world-class vineyards and produce from them, wines that in every way possible, reflect the breathtakingly rare terroir in which the grapes were grown. On hillsides high above Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon is king. And Girard winemaker Marco DiGiulio lets terroir - or the vineyard - determine his choice of varietals. It's no wonder Girard's Cabernet ripens well on the rugged terrain of Napa's mountain appellations, with views that stretch clear across the valley. At lower altitudes, richer soils are more suitable to growing white grapes such as Sauvignon Blanc and red grapes like Merlot. As a result, Girard has dedicated much of its valley floor acreage to these varietals. Additionally, the winery sources a small amount of Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah from individual growers in other parts of the valley. The Chardonnay in the winery's portfolio also comes from grapes grown in Sonoma's upscale Russian River Valley. For more than three decades, Girard has celebrated its sense of place in the California wine country. With the right grapes from the right locations, this Napa Valley winery offers a line-up that features both power and finesse - the hallmark of great California wine. Not as dark in the glass as a lot of Petites. Brambly, woody nose. Surprisingly not as full-bodied on the palate as I might expect. Some cherry flavors, very minimal tannin. Some tartness, but not much. Really an unusual Petite. US$19.79 at Costco in Chino Hills.

A nice wine. Good brambles of berry on the nose and palate. Tart...as most Petite Syrahs are. Light...and lacking a little backbone IMHO. Good....but needs just a little more back bone to give it the thrust that it needs. Cheers!

Drinking window: Drink between 2012 and 2019 (based on 3 user opinions) Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 15 notes) - hiding notes with no text Tasted by noahbw on 10/5/2012 & rated 91 points: 3 hours in decanter. Thick dark purple in the glass. Nose or dark ripe fruit, smokey black pepper, leather, spices, caramelized sugar, dusty wood, branches and bark. Palate is broad yet full of concentrated black berry and pronounced tannin that sings. Jammy notes give way to chocolate and an earthy, herbal and concentrated fruit finish that lingers so nicely. PJG: 91 (234 views) Tasted by jspostles on 8/31/2012 & rated 93 points: Really nice petite...popped and poured - 30 minutes later: voila! (450 views) Tasted by cbbrown3 on 8/24/2012 & rated 91 points: This was decanted for about an hour. The wine is a deep, dark purple color. There are blackberries, black pepper, smoke, licorice, dark chocolate, dried herbs, underbrush, and some earthiness on the dark and pleasing nose. This is medium to full body with fairly solid, ripe tannins and very nice acidity. There is a lot of fruit and spice on the palate with just a bit of earthiness coming in on the back end with dark chocolate and black pepper. Nice length on the finish where the dark chocolate really kicks into high gear. This is very young but already very nice. Interesting. I found it to be a very "red" petite sirah and not much in the way of blue and black fruit on the nose. Lighter style. Nice, but lacking some of the characteristics of what I enjoy in this varietal. - Tasted at winery 12/30/10

I liked the wine with a rich papardelle. At first the wine was quite fruity, but later on heavy tannins balance the fruit

Fruit for this big red is sourced from the Godward Vineyard and Green Vineyard in Calistoga and the Juliana Vineyard in Pope Valley. The Godward Vineyard, with vines ranging in age from 30-100 years old, accents the blend with concentrated and extracted fruit structure. The Green Vineyard promotes the earthy components of the blend, while the Juliana Vineyard adds young, more vibrant dark fruit components. Pressed just prior to dryness to shorten the skin contact, the wine was then finished in French, American and Hungarian oak barrels for 19 months. Wine Spectator said about this wine " Intense and rustic, with an earthy, loamy side to the mix of wild berry and plum flavors. Campfire, candied violet and espresso details gain momentum on the finish. Drink now through 2025.”
