Girard Artistry 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Tasting Notes The vintage is a brilliantly-colored, dark ruby wine with aromas of ripe cherries, red plum, lavender, cinnamon and allspice. There are also hints of tobacco, mocha, toasted walnuts and anise. On the palate, this smooth-textured wine offers a full-mouth, medium bodied feel. The firm tannins are very well integrated, making the wine elegant and approachable at an early age. There are multiple layers to this complex blend that reveal themselves through decanting or by giving the wine time to open up in the glass.

The narrow, winding road up Sage Canyon leads a traveler to one of Napa Valley's best kept secrets: Pritchard Hill, where mountain wineries such as Bryant Family, Colgin and Chappellet have carved a niche into the steep slopes. It's here that you will find the vineyards from which Girard's 93-point Cabernet was born. Girard was founded 35 years ago at the dawn of New Age winemaking in California. Since its inception, Girard Winery's quest has remained unchanged: to seek out world-class vineyards and produce from them, wines that in every way possible, reflect the breathtakingly rare terroir in which the grapes were grown. On hillsides high above Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon is king. And Girard winemaker Marco DiGiulio lets terroir - or the vineyard - determine his choice of varietals. It's no wonder Girard's Cabernet ripens well on the rugged terrain of Napa's mountain appellations, with views that stretch clear across the valley. At lower altitudes, richer soils are more suitable to growing white grapes such as Sauvignon Blanc and red grapes like Merlot. As a result, Girard has dedicated much of its valley floor acreage to these varietals. Additionally, the winery sources a small amount of Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah from individual growers in other parts of the valley. The Chardonnay in the winery's portfolio also comes from grapes grown in Sonoma's upscale Russian River Valley. For more than three decades, Girard has celebrated its sense of place in the California wine country. With the right grapes from the right locations, this Napa Valley winery offers a line-up that features both power and finesse - the hallmark of great California wine. Girard artistry 2005 has a lovely, lovely nose. A medium mouthfeel, with a nice, if not extravagant finish. The flavor mixes red and black fruits. Probably worth its 90 rating.

It was this wine that first showed me that at the intersection of great wine, good food, and amazing friends there is real joy in wine. It is wines like this that add life to life! Being a relative newbie, I had the pleasure of enjoying this wine at a private tasting while visiting Napa Valley. It was paired with some aged sharp cheddar that made the richness and complexity of this wine jump out of the glass and onto my palate. I will never be the same.

Big, bad, cellar worthy and not so easy to find. Intense and complex. Give it some bottle time
