(bottled in mid-May) Bright, pale yellow. Lemon oil, smoke and a whiff of stony reduction on the nose. The palate begins with almost a sweet impression, but thereandrsquo;s also terrific energy and tension to the flavors of liquid rock and orange blossom. I love the combination of ripeness, sweetness of fruit and minerality here. Finishes with superb lift and length-in fact, this is every bit as long as the premier crus here in 2008. Terrific taut, ageworthy wine: Picq told me he bottled a lot of magnums of this juice.

Pale green-tinged yellow. Slightly reduced aromas of minerals, lemon oil and Poire William, with a note of blood orange emerging with air. Dense and lush but not at all overly rich, with a saline quality and good minerality giving energy to the middle palate. This has a fairly solid 4.0 grams of acidity for the vintage. As broad as this is, it really vibrates on the aftertaste. Picq notes that he only recently bottled the 2008 version of this wine.

Grown in stony chalk from Chicheeandrsquo;s quarry, Picqandrsquo;s 2008 Chablis Dessus de Carriere was as usual destined for June bottling so that I last tasted it from tank. As with the Vaudecorse bottling, we have here a bright, intensely mineral and metaphorically cool customer, even though the two wines are utterly distinctive and picked at opposite ends of the harvest. (These are the first grapes picked.) Marine breeze and chalk dust in the nose follow on a palpably dense palate of bright grapefruit, pineapple, and lemon laced with iodine, cherry pit, chalk, moss, and salt that cling so tenaciously you feel as if you are left trying to scrape it off of your teeth. A hint of vanilla andmdash; along with heliotrope and blond tobacco andmdash; rises from the glass as this takes on air, mimicking a bit of barrel, although like all of Picqandrsquo;s cuvandeacute;es this never sees a slat of oak. This is like a block of stone in comparison with which the Vaudecorse is practically intangible. Expect it to be well worth following for 4andndash;6 years.

The 2009 Chablis Dessus la Carriere is beautifully layered and refined for the vintage. It shows gorgeous clarity and definition, not to mention terrific overall balance. Juicy apricots linger on the generous, radiant finish. This is one of the more energetic, focused 2009s at this address. The high presence of rocks in the soil contributes to the wineandrsquo;s freshness. Anticipated maturity: 2012andndash;2015.

Good pale yellow. Very pure, laid-back aromas of citrus peel and crushed stone, with hints of flint and smoke. Dense and ripe, with an impression of sucrosite buffered by penetrating citrus and grapefruit flavors and a firm spine of acids and minerals. This very rich, gripping wine dusts the palate with lemon zest and crushed stone on the very long, perfumed finish. A superb and complete 2009, and a stunningly good village wine. Thereandrsquo;s almost no topsoil over the limestone here, notes Picq. This may be even better than the 2008 version.

(picked at the beginning of the harvest, on September 15) Pale green-tinged yellow.
