- Didier Picq told me that they began picking on October 4th and continued until the 14th. July and August were ugly, which is to say cool and rainy but it's hard to imagine a better September. We gained two full degrees and it completely dried out the incipient rot. The harvest was a big one but the nice thing about that is it enabled us to retain only the very best juice. Sugars were good at between 11 and 12.8% with ideal acidities of 4.2 to 4.8 grams. I really like the style of the vintage as it is one that emphasizes the natural minerality of Chablis. I think 2004 is better than 2001 as it has the balance read more...of 2000. It's also particular in the sense that most big vintages, take 1992 or 1999 for example, you have a mild sense of dilution but you don't have that with 2004. Picq has been on a roll as of late with fantastic 2002s, much better than average 2003s and his 2004s are flat out terrific. If by chance you don't know the wines, do yourself a favor and pick up a trial bottle. Note that the style is ultra pure with no wood. (Doug Polaner Selections, Mt. Kisco, NY, Kent Beverage Co., WY, MI and Augustan Wine Imports, Miramar, FL; Morris & Verdun, O.W. Loeb & Co., UK). Note: from 15 year old vines This is aromatically finer and slightly more elegant though not as concentrated or powerful yet the middle weight flavors possess exceptional delineation and focus plus a fantastically complex backend. This is a linear and pungently citrus-infused wine that delivers buckets of Chablis character with laser-like focus. The character is different from the Vosgros but both offer much to admire. (hide)
