Gigondas la Cave "La Reference" Gigondas 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2009 vintage in the Rhone Valley continues to receive great praise from the critics. The Wine Spectator has rated the vintage 93-96 points and the Wine Advocate has rated it 93 points. We’ve tasted a number of great values from the vintage including the 2009 Cave de Gigondas La Reference. Gigondas is an appellation in the Rhone Valley that is overshadowed by its more famous neighbor Chateauneuf du Pape, which lies just to the west. The regions and the blends are similar, with Grenache being the dominant grape in each. The 2009 Gigondas La Reference is a blend of primarily Grenache with some Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault. What isn’t similar to Chateauneuf du Pape is the price. The 2009 Gigondas La Reference has not been rated by the Wine Spectator yet, but it was rated 89-91 points by the International Wine Cellar which was one of the top rated Gigondas selling for less than $20!

Crap - this developed into a stellar wine. From a relatively shy youngster to a bold, enthusiastic adult this was fantastic. Smokey oak, blackberry and a smattering of red berry fruits, roses, spice and green vegtal characteristics lead to a full fruity, spicey palate that is shock full of tannins and juicy acidity leading to lingering, fruity finish. Great wine - will buy again from this producer. If you can - buy - and drink now. Outstanding Paul 92 points
