Central Otago's first claim to fame was for the gold-rush in the mid 1800's. One of the gold miners was Jean Feraud. He was the son of a French winemaking family, and recognised the potential of the region for viticulture.
Feraud planted the region's first wine-producing grapes in 1864, and the wines he produced back then achieved awards in Australian wine shows of the time. But this early phase of winemaking was short lived - when the gold ran out, Jean Feraud left the region and the 1200 vines that he planted died out.
In the 1890's the New Zealand government, through the DSIR (Department of Industrial and Scientific Research) commissioned Romeo Bragato, an Italian-trained viticultural consultant, to advise on the potential wine industry in New Zealand. Bragato surveyed the country from top to bottom, and upon reaching Central Otago in 1895 he proclaimed that "there is no better country on the face of the earth for Burgundy grapes than Central Otago".
Unfortunately, it would seem that in the climate of the late 19th century, the settlers were interested in stronger stuff than fermented grape juice, and there were no takers for his advice. Read less
