Gianni Brunelli Brunello di Montalcino 2013

Member Review by Bob Fyke:

Red cherry skins, and dried flowers lead the way on the nose with some clay Earth, mineral, and meatiness. The palate is nicely balanced, with finesse, showing more firm red cherry and floral notes, followed by a long, dusty finish. This is the full package, complete, satisfying, and likely to last in the cellar for a while. 91 Pts

Gianni Brunelli:
Tuscan tradition tells euphoria of wine and oil silence. If the wine is indeed fun and noise, the oil is composure and silence. Slips slowly - but also the oil to be true needs special care. I want to do this by selecting the olive trees, grinding stone, as it once was, the hand-picked olives. It will emerge a green color product like wheat just popped. The flavor will be stronger than those who remain in the mouth without kneading. A portion of the oil produced will be consumed by customers of the tavern The Lodges, what is left will be sold. The package will be very special. Read less

The color was rich dark ruby with aromas of cherry and slight vanilla. The body was a little less than what the color was telling. Felt a medium to heavy weight in the mouth. Was expecting a deep heavy wine. What it was is what I was wanting at that time. A wine for the season that I could relax on. Probably would have worked miracles with food, but I just wasn't hungry at the time. The flavor was a nice cherry and plum flavor. I thought it was fruit heavy, but as it opened up in the mouth and through the finish it developed a nice mineral touch. My original thought was that famous pencil lead descriptor. I don't pull that one out a whole lot, but think it is worth mentioning here.

Magnum size bottle (1.5L) This Brunello Riserva from the late Gianni Brunelli is a very rare item- only 400 cases were produced and only a handful in magnums. The Wine Spectator scored it 96 points and said "A very classic Brunello, with aromas of plum, dark cherry, flowers and citrus. Full-bodied, with fabulous fruit and velvety tannins. Everything is in the right place. The best ever from this producer. Best after 2012." Extremely limited.
