Gianfranco Alessandria Barolo San Giovanni 2005

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

AWE blind tasting - smells like wood flooring, sweet, then menthol, nice focus, a bit of an extracted feel, nice slightly medicinal fruit, a bit woody feeling, nice cool fruit, very good ripeness, quite drying but flavorful, 86-87

Espresso bean, chocolate and mature blackberry shape a solid and dense wine that also boasts ethereal accents of licorice, cigar box, cedar and spice. The texture here is smooth, yielding but firm and the wine definitely leaves a long and delicious mark on the palate. Drink after 2015.

Alessandria’s 2005 Barolo San Giovanni is an over-achiever in this vintage. To be sure, it is a relatively small-scaled, feminine San Giovanni, but the balance and harmony is all there in this first-class Barolo. In 2005 the wine shows more dark red fruits (as opposed to the blacker profile than is the norm), raspberries, crushed flowers, spices and French oak, yet the tannins are beautifully integrated, the finish is long and the wine’s overall balance is exemplary. The San Giovanni offers an additional layer of density and richness over the Barolo, but it, too, is drinking beautifully today. Anticipated maturity: 2009–2020.
