Giancarlo Travaglini Gattinara DOCG 2003
Wine Advocate # 150 Dec 2003 Robert Parker 90 Drink 2003 - 2018 The dense purple-colored 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc) reveals a sweet perfume of black currants, an expansive, full-bodied palate, surprising elegance as well as accessibility, excellent purity, and a long, layered finish. It is a successful 2000 Cabernet to drink now and over the next 12-15 years.
The Travaglini winegrowing company, based in the heart of the hills of the Gattinara region, has 55 ha used for wine production. There are 39 ha currently planted with vines and the rest is pending plantation. Both the “GATTINARA DOCG”, a highly structured wine for ageing, and a small part of the young wine known as “CINZIA”, are produced from the Nebbiolo grape variety (known locally as "Spanna".
Potpourri and spices on the nose. On the palette, plums, almost jammy and the tannins are little drying. Big fruity flavor and a good amount of tannin that will liky result in a very nice bottle of wine in a few years but I feel there's a lack of acidity here that may take away fromt his bottles life span. however, with all that said, a great bottle for the price.
Paired with a loin and leg of hare wrapped in a double smoked bacon w/ a sour cream sauce. Was perfect!
Outstanding, berry. Similar in style to excellent Oregon Pinot Noirs. Perfect with red meat. Needs to decant.
External Reviews for Giancarlo Travaglini Gattinara DOCG
A deep pomegranate red wine with delicate fragrances of violet and rose on the nose. The palate is mouth filling with red-fruit flavors of raspberry and cherry and hints of licorice and vanilla. Full-bodied with soft, silky tannins, the wine has a long, smooth finish. Total maturation time is 3 years.
Wine Tasting NotesDeep ruby-red with garnet reflections. Charming and structured bouquet recalling red fruit, blackberry, plum and liquorice with hints of vanilla, cream and leather. Full-bodied, dry and deep flavor with a fruity accent underlined by a slight sapidity. Long and persistent aftertaste.
