This offers up a lovely and mature bouquet of spicy Nebbiolo fruit with a top not of dried porcini and an ever so slight toffeed edge with grace notes of mint and toasted pecan all over a slightly smoky, heather tinged core of spiced red plum and berry fruits In the mouth the bottle sweetness here is wonderful with the core of strawberry fruit tinged with black mineral flecked earth and spice. Focused and taut, an athlete in peak condition this is perhaps a touch small scaled but so well balanced and with excellent vitality in the mouth. A touch simple perhaps but only in light of the wines it shared the night with. 92pts

Medium red. Very ripe strawberry on the expressive forward nose. Elegant and penetrating with very good grip to the cherry and strawberry flavors. Not especially fleshy for the year; in fact this went into a shell in the glass. Finishes with edgy tannins and lovely lift. This suave wine should harmonize with five or six years of cellaring. 91+ Stephen Tanzers IWC.

The 2009 Barbaresco Santo Stefano is a big improvement over the 2008 although it still isn t up to the level of the best wines that emerged from this historic cellar in Neive over the last four decades. Crushed flowers tobacco cloves and sweet dried cherries are all woven together nicely. Overall the 2009 is a pretty Barbaresco with lovely mid-palate pliancy and fine overall harmony. The balance of fruit acidity and tannin is solid. Stylistically it is a fairly light to medium-bodied wine

An elegant style with rose and white pepper aromas followed by strawberry cherry and herb flavors. Balanced on the tannic side with a firm dense structure and a lingering finish. Best from 2016 through 2030.

Stylistically it is a fairly light to medium-bodied wine with much more near-term appeal than potential for aging. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. -Antonio Galloni Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
