Giacomo Conterno Cascina Francia 1988

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This starts out quite shallow on the nose with minerally rainwater notes and the slightly salty note of oyster shells giving the tarry fruit a bit of a salted plum quality. With air the fruit turns decidedly redder with touches of spicy anise seed and lavender adding depth and soft menthol top notes rounding out the aromatic profile. On entry this is tight and focused with lovely balance. The tannins really soften quickly in the glass giving this a refreshing hard cherry fruit quality built as much on acids as on tannin. This opens and turns giving quite quickly even turning fairly velvety with time in the glass, showing just a touch of mouth-grabby tannins on the moderately long finale. Very well behaved and at peak, this lacks the complexity of the best but is delicious right now. 92pts

Immediately complex on the nose with complex aromas of iron, mint, nettles coffee bean, roses and spice accenting a core of rusty red fruit. This is a big wine and it needs more time but over the course of an hour it reveals powerful and medicinal black fruit flavors in a style that remains masculine yet elegant and refined. A burst of sliced orange greets the palate followed by sliced cherry and plum flavors that lead to the long and powerful finish, which is filled with licorice, dried orange peel and herbal nuances. This just misses greatness, lacking the extra depth that would push it over the edge, but it is a fabulous wine. 93pts

The nose immediately shows mint with saddle leather and dark red fruit. On the palate is where this wine scored a lot of points as it showed a resolved and velvety, round mouth feel with cherry, herbs, roses and hint of burnt sugar. The finish was long and tapered away with red fruit and rose. This was one of my top three of the evening, coming in third place for me.
