What to Expect

Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Editorial Reviews

This was opened aroun 5 pm but it was about 9 pm by the time we got to it. At first the nose is balsam tinged strawberry fruit before exploding with hints of menthol, tar, boysenberry, muskmelon, so perfumed and intense but it fails to prepare one for the intensity in the mouth, outrageous concentration of intensely sweet and sapid fruit, after the subtlties of the older wines this is overstimulation. It's like getting a hand job without lubricant from, as Ken adds, an old farmer, if you like that sort of thing of course. Like I said overstimulation. This is just a monster, It'll probably read more...

Rating: 93-96 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 117, November/December 2004 Good full red. Very deep, sappy, complex nose combines black fruits, violet, rose and minerals. Then sweet, dense and lush, with terrific clarity of flavor and inner-mouth perfume. This has all the elements of great Barolo. Finishes with compelling aromatic complexity, noble tannins and great length.

Rating: 96-99 - As reviewed by Piedmont Report in Issue 7, May 2006 As the 1999 Monfortino is poured from the spigot and into my glass its ethereal perfume seems to fill the room. It opens with a breathtaking nose suggesting freshly cut roses, violets, tar and licorice along with generous amounts of sweet dark fruit supported by the classic structure that defines this producer's best wines, closing with a finish that lasts an eternity. I have tasted this wine on four occasions and it remains one of the greatest young wines of my lifetime. Mere words can't possibly describe this stunning Barolo, which is on my short list as the one of finest wines of the read more...
