Even after being double decanted for 8 hours this was a bit reticent out of the bottle. Hightoned with notes of oyster sauce and sweet soy lifted by a touch of VA this evolved slowly but surely becoming quite smoky and sweetly vegetal resembling tomato ketchup based barbq sauce for a period. With time the smokiness took over and the wine added smoked nuts and warm tar tones while the vegetal elements resembled salted capers and green tobacco with a lime leaf elemetn that helped frame the emerging bitter cherry notes. iIn the mouth this was so precise and faceted that it etched the vibrant wild cherry fruit into your mouth. It was layered and so perfectly balanced but the remarkable length and persistence was amazing. A simple spectacular and near immortal bottle of wine. Along with the 1958 Monfortino and Giacosa's 1989 Collina Rionda this the pinnacle of Barolo. I give it 99pts only because there remains room for positive development!. 2009-2040
Que the music form 2001 A Space odyssey. A wall of a nose redolent of dark cherries, nettles, sweet licorice, moist earth with airing the fruit turns a bit macerated and the citrus tones pop a bit. In the mouth this starts out monolithic, dense and chewy with great structure, massive yet seamless without any clumsiness at all. This remains very tight and youthful throughout the entire evening slowly revealing notes of gunpowder, tea, and fresh rose on the nose until, of course, the final sip when the parts have aligned to allow one a glimps of what is to come. It is though a flag is unfurled in ones mouth reaching up into the sinuses and down the gullet enveloping all in an etheral blanket of sweet and complex fruit. this still needs 10 years plus to peak. Monumental.

Smells like dark berries. Some leather on the nose as well. Acid, tannins, and leather are huge in the mouth. Great stuff. Thanks to GDP for the taste!
Sorry to hear that this was not a sublime bottle. At its best, this is Barolo at its peak. Lots of pure red fruit, iron, soy, aome animal blood and a tremendous amount of structure... I'd put this in the top 2 or 3 bottles of Italian ever enjoyed... at its best...which sadly cannot always be predicted...
