Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino 1955

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

explosive nose, volatile, camphor, dried rosehips, earthy, old woody, amaretti, very high toned and penetrating, notes of espresso, brown spice and burnt sugar-soft, sweet old wine entry, lovely wine unwinding like a spring, strawberry liquory fruit is still vibrant, if a bit rough around the edges, with notes of earth and chalk leading to a bitter almond, apricot kernel note that tapered away to a mineral bitterness finale. this lost tension fairly quickly compared to the other bottles but the nose was so damn impressive, i left to finish the risotto and five minutes later my sinuses were still filled. The volatility that made the wine so interesting eventually faded leaving the bottle slightly less interesting and more evolved than the others, slightly past peak but still 94pts

Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.
