Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia 2010
Powerful on the nose which shows a little prune, classic cherries in alcohol with a sweetness to the fruit and gorgeous framing notes of sandalwood, damp tobacco, sweet rose petals and fine mineral background notes. Powerful and packed with ripe tannins, this exhibits incredible cut on the palate, packed with laser edged tannins, so elegant and fine with remarkable purity to the red fruit on the palate which has a slightly wild and exotic edge to it. This is so elegant and yet so powerful, and long. The purity and persistence here is jaw dropping, but today this is a bit hard and so focused that you could miss all the detail. Another 1989 in the making? 96ptsAdd winemaker's notes

Tight and minera on the nose with bit of cocoa dusted fruit under sweet floral base notes rich with tar, licorice, and macerated herb aromas. Rich if a bit tough in the mouth, this is all about grape skins today, with austere and almost bitter intense flavors of cherry, medicinal, and earth on the palate, all topped with aromatic floral and red fruited notes that drive the long, finessed finish. There is an innate sweetness here that will emerge with time, though there are suggestions of what this wine will become on the long finish which shows perfect density and superbly ripe tannins. 94pts
An immediate, intense nose of deep, dark fruit with a muscular disposition that reveals green floral, balsam and spice notes above the coiled fruit. Big and dense in the mouth this will need a bit of time to show well though it is layered and long with exceptional intensity and great acidity that is couched in the chewy fruit. This has the feel of very ripe, perfectly ripe fruit. 2011-2018 92pts
An intense and very youthful nose of soil, mineral, plumskin, and cigar ash. Focused and taut in the mouth with wonderfully ripe acidity and great minerality all balanced against the slightly astringent plummy fruit. Turns darker fruited with airing revealing a core of blackberry fruit. The finish is very long with a touch af malo butteriness still. Delicious now but with all the ingredients for a long healthy life. 2008-2018
Showing a touch of alcohol on the nose, this comes off as fruity and a touch simple on the nose with a background of slightly wooly and woodsy tones. On the palate this has tons of orange and raspberry fruit backed up with lots of tannin that has a slightly unripe, bitter edge to it. This is a powerful wine, no doubt, and has very good balance but the slight edge of unripe tannin has remained a concern here and the touch of heat on the nose follows through on the finish as well makes me think that this may not improve much over the course of time. 89pts
A very impressive showing for this wine. This has freshened up nicely and while the tannin remains just a hint bitter the fruit is rich and ripe with orange, citrus tones to the deep red cherry notes that are just a touch jammy. Lovely herbal freshness in the mouth with superb acidity. Solid length. This will need 8-10 years to be at it's best but is another top producer in 2003, not that that is a surprise.
2001 G. Conterno Cascina Francia – deep and balsamic nose, tons of black minerality, dark fruits, plum skins, mossy green herbs, rich tar, menthol, incredible depth and power on the nose. Super rich cherry fruit on entry, chewy, sinewy, black spice great depth, tons of soft tannins, such richness, this reminds me of 1989 Cascina Francia with it’s dollop of Monfortino. This is exceptional
Four and a half glasses
Superb. A wine that confirms my desire to want to move to Piemonte. Luscious. Harmonious. Elegant. Rich. Bejeweled. Quite a stunner. Dark forest floor fruit on the nose seduce you into the wine. Aromatic midpalate broadens the weight in the mouth without making the wine feel heavy. And the finish is soft and complete. Truly spectacular showing. Not sure I could age this wine; too good to drink right now.
not for me. very austere, high acid. Though helpup over 3 days of decanting
The 2003 showed big briary red fruit, cinnamon, herbs and dark chocolate on the nose with a little heat. The palate showed sweet, spiced red fruit and raisin but was chewy with cloying tannins. It was textbook to 2003 and left me wondering if I was drinking Barolo.
Very dry and acidic. Ripe with a funky, astringent quality. Tasted at the Snooth / Chambers Street Wines Magnificent Barolo Tasting
The best Barolo in 2003!

The 2009 Barbera d'Alba Cascina Francia is at first quite a bit more floral and ethereal than the Cerretta, but with time in the glass the wine finds its center. This plummy Barbera is smooth and a delight to drink. It's elegant on the palate and filled with juicy Barbera character. One of the finer, classic producers in Piedmont.
The Barbera grape makes one of the many everyday red wines of the region. This is by no means an ordinary expression of Barbera. It's age worthy and a delight to drink. Elegant on the palate and filled with juicy plums, spice and mineraled tannins. Giacomo Conterno is one of the finer, classic producers in Piedmont.
This is a balanced and expressive Barbera from a legendary traditionalist. It is unmatched in its sophistication, yet it positively explodes with dark fruit, licorice and spice.
A Barbera wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2006 Giacomo Conterno Barbera d'Alba Cascina Francia 750ml
The 2006 Barbera d'Alba is a knockout. The aromatics alone are worth the price of admission. A Barbera wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2006 Giacomo Conterno Barbera d'Alba Cascina Francia 750ml
The recently-bottled 2005 Barolo Cascina Francia is, as expected, somewhat closed down at this stage from an aromatic perspective. That said, it is impossible to ignore the wine's richness and depth, both of which are impressive. With time in the glass hints of sweet roses, cherries, spices and tar emerge, all framed by impeccably silky tannins. As always, readers should taste this wine as soon as possible, as it will almost certainly head for a slumber during which it will be impossible to evaluate with any accuracy. Today, this mid-weight, graceful Barolo Cascina Francia looks to be accessible relatively early, which means around age 10-12 give or take. It is another superb Barolo from Giacomo Conterno. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030. - Robert Parker 95+ Points Elegant aromas of redcurrant, strawberry, cedar, truffle, dried flowers and minerals, all lifted by a topnote of orange peel.
