Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

94 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): This deep, powerful Barolo reveals awesome richness and an almost liqueur-like quality to its fruit that is balanced by the chalky mineral notes that provide freshness on the finish and help convey an impression of notable balance... Simply put, this is a stunning Barolo... 2009-2023. (Oct 2007)

Showing a touch of alcohol on the nose, this comes off as fruity and a touch simple on the nose with a background of slightly wooly and woodsy tones. On the palate this has tons of orange and raspberry fruit backed up with lots of tannin that has a slightly unripe, bitter edge to it. This is a powerful wine, no doubt, and has very good balance but the slight edge of unripe tannin has remained a concern here and the touch of heat on the nose follows through on the finish as well makes me think that this may not improve much over the course of time. 89pts

A very impressive showing for this wine. This has freshened up nicely and while the tannin remains just a hint bitter the fruit is rich and ripe with orange, citrus tones to the deep red cherry notes that are just a touch jammy. Lovely herbal freshness in the mouth with superb acidity. Solid length. This will need 8-10 years to be at it's best but is another top producer in 2003, not that that is a surprise.

Very dry and acidic. Ripe with a funky, astringent quality. Tasted at the Snooth / Chambers Street Wines Magnificent Barolo Tasting

I love how the user reviewers contradict the "pro" reviews. I drank this wine in 2010. Exactly as the others said. Dry, hollow, hot. Not fit for Barolo. Quiet terrible considering it's from Giacomo Conterno. As a contrast, the 2003 Il Favot (declassified Barolo) from Aldo Conterno (the brother's winery) is superb.

RP: The 2003 Barolo Cascina Francia is a remarkable wine for the vintage. This deep, powerful Barolo reveals awesome richness and an almost liqueur-like quality to its fruit that is balanced by the chalky mineral notes that provide freshness on the finish and help convey an impression of notable balance. In 2003 there is no Monfortino, and the Cascina Francia surely benefits from the addition of that juice which is mostly felt in the wines depth. Resisting the temptation to harvest too early, Roberto Conterno waited until October 8 to start picking in his Cascina Francia vineyard, long after most producers had already brought the fruit in. He had the benefit of the late September rains that helped restore at least a little freshness to the fruit, and as a result his 2003 Cascina Francia doesnt have the aggressive tannins that plague so many wines. Simply put, this is a stunning Barolo...Anticipated maturity: 2009-2023.

The Giacomo Conterno estate, now run by Giovanni Conterno, is one of the most prestigious in Barolo. The estate was founded in the early 20th century and has, since then, made some of the most beautiful and powerful Baroli available. The wine is ultra-traditional; Conterno does a long maceration and ages only in large oak botti. From a stunningly ripe vintage, this is a wine to age.
