Editorial Reviews for Giacomo Conterno Barolo
Another great nose, full and complex with layered notes of licorice, wild cherry, animal fur, dry earth, salame, and very fine rose and lilac notes. In the mouth this is silky and polished with impressive weight. The fruit is dark and medicinal with a bitter, earth edge to the very ripe fruits. The texture is velvety and this really saturates the tongue with superb, sweet fruit that recalls tarry, roasted or dried strawberries. This is still decidedly young and ever so disjointed but with fabulous potential for the future. Leave it for a few years yet, if you can. 2012-2040 96pts
There is an edge of terpene noticeable here at first that initially detracts from the nose but the rich core of slightly gamy fruit, redolent of sweet cherries, soon overtakes any sense of inadequacy here. The aromas are powerful and deep with chiseled mineral notes, clear and precise and offering complicating tones of espresso and black pepper to the brilliant nose. On the palate this is immensely broad with fabulous integration. It’s almost weightless at first, deceptively so. The tannins are soft, adding a touch of peach skin to the palate where the dark, savory fruit begins to assert itself. The wine remains youthful and fresh through the mid-palate and onto the finish, which is taut and shows the perfect balance of this wine as the true power of this austere masterpiece begins to reveal itself. The length, freshness, and detail of this wine on the finish are breathtaking. A legendary wine in the making. 97pts
The nose showed dried red fruits, tar, mushroom broth, a bit of black strap molasses and a hint of barnyard. Showed a gorgeous structure on the palate that gives the impression that this wine will last the ages. Still a little tight with a tannic grip but giving none the less with dark red fruit and a mineral core. Finish was long and fine, showing sour cranberry. This was the wine of the night for me.
Showed bright sour cherry, sage and florist shop on the nose. The palate was full and soft with cherries, cedar and tobacco with a long finish. Just coming to age.
